  1. Earth Science • Use for Scientific Investigation SOLs • SOL 1,2,3 • Use Stella for cycles: volcanoes, water cycle, star cycle, rock cycle, other cycles • Mapping, GIS tools • Agent tools for resource management.

  2. Math • Problems with critical skills including basic algebra skills. • Graphs of math functions using spreadsheets. Students could use the graphs of the functions and discover the features for themselves. • Could use Stella and Agents. How do we adapt this for math students? What does it show us? What is the math behind it? • Collaborations with science can bring in applied math

  3. Biology • Scientific Investigation SOLs (look at variables, how they change and what impact changes have) • Use Stella to better understand concepts • Cycles: water cycle, nitrogen cycles, carbon cycle, population growth, predator/prey relationships • Antibiotics • SOLs=Bio 1, Bio 9

  4. Physics • There is no concept in physics that can’t be covered using modeling and simulation. • Challenge=learning how to use the software • Opportunity=find collaborators in math to connect math and science content together.

  5. Chemistry • Stella topics • gas law, chemical kinetics, electrochemistry, equilibrium principles – e.g. Le Chatelier’s principle • Agent-based topics • Le Chatelier’s principle, physical equilibrium – phase changes, solutions • Excel topics • Phase diagrams, periodic trends, acid/base titration, Beer’s law

  6. CTE • Collaboration • Support SOLs in all areas. For example, cover atomic structure, static electricity • How do we bring this back to others in our schools? (Convince teachers that it won’t be a lot of extra work for them.) • Focus on benefits to students. • Tech Ed has been using modeling and simulation for years. We have used it. Now we need to encourage others to use it as well.

  7. ITRT – Curriculum folks • Key to bringing this to students=professional development and curriculum development. • Carry teachers through at least 3 cycles of implementation. • Rasmol could be used to teach fifth grade SOLs in chemistry • Lots of applications of Excel in elementary school • Portaportal web site with LOTS of modeling and simulation sites. • http://guest.portaportal.com/vste07
