  2. Early Life and Education • William G. Anderson was born on September 9th, 1860 in St. Joseph, Michigan. • He was a very active child • Random Fact: William’s was introduced to physical education, by Edward Hitchcock Sr. >>> Edward Hitchcock raised William to a pair of rings and left him to hang there till he cried to the point that Edward allowed him to come down.

Early life and Education (cont.) • William graduated from Roxbury, in Massachusetts. • He wished to go to Amherst under the instruction of Hitchcock, but at that time it was to expensive for him. • Anderson then attended University of Wisconsin and was involved in coed gym classes and an athletic association to help keep him occupied during his two year stay. • Graduated from Med School in Cleveland, Ohio at the age of 25 • Random fact: By the early age of 15 Anderson could swim 12 miles.

  4. Importance to Physical Education • William G. Anderson started his career in the very beginning of the Emergence of a Profession. • So would insist that William G. Anderson started this new time period. • While William was employed at Adelphi Academy, He realized that he did not have the experience he needed to teach, and desired to create a place where people could come and exchange information and advice.

Importance to Physical Education • Anderson wanted to create a community interested in Physical Education, and physical training and where they could debate and learn from each other • On November 27, 1885 Anderson organized a meeting at Adelphi Academy. • On that day they formed the Association for the Advancement of Physical Education. • That meeting was “the birth of the profession”. • Today William is most known for the William G. Anderson Award in physical education.

  6. Do I Agree? • YES! • We can learn from one another • We all have different strengths • We can only give the kids all they deserve if we adequately prepare ourselves to teach them.
