Known for: • Wanted more education for physical training, education, and gymnastics • Held meeting on Nov. 27th 1885 • 60 people attended; 49 became members • First secretary for the: Association for the Advancement of Physical Education • Founded the Brooklyn Normal School of Physical Education in 1886

  4. Related to our profession: • Instructor of physical training • Only needed some knowledge of medicine & some experience in gymnastics • His curriculum was based on biological & medical sciences • Now represents a major in physical education

  5. A few random facts: • His sister Kate and brother Henry were also physical education teachers • At age 15 he could swim 12 miles • Assistant and director of health & physical education at Yale (1892-1932)
