  1. Before the Interview

  2. Résumé and Portfolio • Read the Job advertisement and make a list of selection criteria • Tailor your résumé to suit the job by analyzing the selection criteria • Rearrange your career portfolio for the interview • Be thorough with your résumé and the relevant evidence in your portfolio

  3. Interview questions • Research the company – If possible, make an enquiry about the interview • Make a list of probable interview questions • Prepare appropriate answers for them and get someone to go through them • Make changes to the answers and read the aloud • Practice saying these answers several times • Have a couple of trial interviews with a friend or family member

  4. Interview Place • Find the Interview place using Google maps or My NRMA • Decide how you would get there – if using public transport use the transport infoline – 131 500 • Visit the place earlier, if possible and get familiar with the surroundings • On the day of the interview, be on time (try to be at least 10 – 15 minutes early) – do not turn up too early, either • Report to the reception and wait patiently – be attentive and do not leave the place on any account

  5. Dress and Appearance • Dress in clothes that you feel comfortable • Light coloured tops and dark colored trousers or skirts are the most appropriate – alternatives are acceptable • Closed shoes are a safe choice for most jobs. However, for office jobs designer shoes could be used • Avoid too much make-up or perfume • Do not much jewelry or flashy colours • Do not wear any form of dress or accessories that will give room for discrimination.

  6. At the venue • Dress in clean, comfortable clothes; have your regular meal and plenty of water • Make sure that you have all your documents in your career portfolio and copies of your résumé • Report to the receptionist, introduce yourself and wait patiently • Be attentive, but not nervous and do not be distracted (like talking to others and trying to make friends) • Do not stress out by trying to remember the answers to the questions you have prepared – just relax and think positive
