  4. What springs to mind when you hear the term ‘junk food’?

  5. Junk food is an informal term applied to some foods that are perceived to have little or no nutritional value or to products with nutritional value but which also have ingredients considered unhealthy when regularly eaten, or to those considered unhealthy to consume at all.

  8. JUNK FOOD INCLUDES • CHIPS • HAMBURGER • PIZZA • ICE CREAM • CHOCOLATE • SANDWICH • FRIED CHICKEN • CHICKEN NUGGETS • FRENCH FRIES

  9. WHY JUNK FOOD? Quick and easy Cheap Tastes good Provides satiety and comfort Available everywhere

  10. WHAT JUNK FOOD CONTAINS?

  11. Saturated fat, sugar & salt. • Little or no fruit, vegetables, or dietary fiber.

  12. Common junk foods include salted snack foods (chips, crisps), candy, gum, most sweet desserts, fried fast food and carbonated beverages (sodas) as well as alcoholic beverages.

  13. MORE ON JUNK FOODS Junk foods are known for the high amount of sugar present in them. The amount of minerals and vitamins is less in junk foods, while it is loaded with calories.

  14. Food items such as chips, cookies, candy bars, muffins, fried foods, etc., contain high amounts of hydrogenated oils and fats. The trans fats or hydrogenated oils present in these foods do not serve any purpose in the nourishment of the body.

  15. SOFT DRINKS The aerated drinks contain artificial flavors and colour and also huge amount of carbon dioxide which is very bad to health.

  16. Most of soda has caffeine and it is addictive. Drinks like pepsi,cola have 15 times of caffeine than coffee but they also have sodium benzoate acid. Sodium benzoate acid, when experimented with dogs, injected 1gram per 1kg body per day lead inability in motors, gave seizures, and lead to death in 250 days.

  17. What is it about junk food that is so bad for us?

  18. ILL EFFECTS • Junk food is made, using a lot of saturated fats. Such fats are unhealthy and on digestion can release a lot of toxins into your body. Your body gets food but not healthy food.

  19. Junk food is sometime made using ingredients that are not very clean. This can in the long run spoil your stomach, liver and intestines. • Junk food does not contain vitamins and minerals and much of the nutrients seen in properly cooked food and in raw food so, it makes the person having such food very prone to illnesses.

  20. Continuous eating of junk food exposes the body to long periods of bad nutrition. The result is release of free radicals which are the chief factors responsible for aging effect.

  21. EATING JUNK FOOD CAUSES • Weight gain • Diabetes • Heart diseases • Lack of energy • Poor Concentration • Liver Failure

  22. WEIGHT GAIN • Junk food contains large amounts of fat, and as fat accumulates in your body, you'll gain weight and could become obese. DIABETES • The high levels of sugar and simple carbohydrates in junk food can lead to diabetes.

  23. HEART DISEASES • The high levels of fat and sodium in junk food and fast food can contribute to heart disease by raising blood cholesterol levels. LACK OF ENERGY • Junk food doesn't contain the nutrients your body needs to stay healthy. As a result, you may feel chronically fatigued and lack the energy you need to complete daily tasks.

  24. POOR CONCENTRATION • One disadvantage of consuming junk food is that it contains high amount of oil and fat. As a result, human body finds this food difficult to digest and needs to spend high amount of blood and enzymes. LIVER FAILURE • Liver gets damaged due to presence of ingredients such as fat, cholesterol and salt inside the junk foods.

  25. Is chocolate the most addictive junk food?

  26. There are very little real chocolate in chocolate bars and chocolate cookies. The little chocolate in it are mixed with partially hydrogenated byproductand it contains large amount of fat. • These fats can cause heart disease, arteriosclerosis , liver cancer, stomach cancer, large intestine cancer , and diabetes.

  27. EFFECTS ON CHILDREN The situation is worst in case of children who from a very young age get hooked on fast food.Making them change their food habits from fatty and sweet foods and develop a tastes for health promoting fruits and vegetables is a task easier said than done.

  28. Such children would grow up to be obese adults who have never felt the advantages of being a healthy weight.

  29. GOOD EATING HABITS • To be taken after washing the hands. • It should neither be very hot or absolutely cold.

  30. Heavy food should be taken in a limited quantity. • Water should be avoided atleast 15 minutes before food. • Heavy work or exercise should be avoided after food.

  31. After lunch one should walk 100 steps slowly. • Food should not be taken too hurriedly or slowly. • Heavy food should be taken in a limited quantity.

  32. FRESH AND PURE DIET • Nourishes the body • Keeps the mind peaceful • Leads to true health • Balanced flow of energy between mind &body.

  33. CONCLUSION Junk food is becoming more and more acceptable and convenient in our society. With our daily busy schedules, many just don’t have time to prepare the food at home or go out to eat at a restaurant. It’s better that one reduce the portion size of unhealthy junk foods and also don’t forget to include large amounts of fruits & vegetables in your diet.

  34. The ultimate purpose of life is to attain salvation; for attaining this a disease free life is essential and it can be achieved mainly by practicing wholesome food habits.
