  1. Dissemination & Awareness2006-2007 Introductory Remarks 15 February, 2006

  2. Outline • FP6 • FP7 • This meeting • Q&A • Overview of your inputs • Practicalities

  3. K&C within FP6 • 58 projects, ~640 contractors, 260 M€ • RTD&D: • long termresearch (formal, theoretical) • component technologyresearch & development • applied, system-level research • demonstration • emphasis on • generic, enabling technologies • flexible, cross-sectoral application platforms

  4. 3 project lines • Cross-media Content (call 2):novel forms of digital contentcreativity & interactivity, user experience & control, story-telling & non-linear narratives, cross-platform delivery … • Content & Knowledge (call 4):intelligent, dynamic contentaccess & management (meta data generation / extraction, semantic annotation & indexing, contextual retrieval…), automated workflows, aggregation & personalisation, reuse ... • Knowledge (calls 1 & 4):intersection of Web, MM and KR&R(SemWeb+)networked information & communities, automation of knowledge lifecycle, web / multimedia “documents”, from static to dynamic information, interaction & evolving processes

  5. Last (?) series of projects • Call 4: 152 submissions received • 25 proposals retained, nearly 250 organisations • 124 M€ total funding • largest EU call ever in the ICK domain • projects started Jan 06 / about to start • and now … Call 6 (deadline: 25 Apr) http://www.cordis.lu/ist/kct/projects.htm

  8. Towards FP7 • new framework programme expected to startlate 2006 / early 2007 • main proposals (FP, SPs, RfP) forwarded to Council & Parliament • significant budget increase … depending on EU financial perspectives after 2006 • traditional as well as new SPs (eg Space) • multinational collaborative research (Cooperation SP) as well as grants for individual teams (Ideas SP)

  9. ICT research within FP7 • IST rebranded now simply ICT, ~2 B€/year? • still the largest thematic component within FP • centred around 4 components: • Core Technologies (incl. Knowledge) • Integration of Technologies (eg home environments) • Applications Research (incl. Content) • Future and Emerging Technologies See www.cordis.lu/fp7/

  10. Knowledge & Content in FP7 • Knowledge, cognitive and learning systems:methods and techniques to acquire and interpret, represent and personalise, navigate and retrieve, share and deliver knowledge, recognizing the semantic relationships in content for use by humans and machines • ICT for content, creativity and personal development:novel forms of interactive, non-linear and self-adaptive content; creativity and enriched user experience; cross-media content customisation and delivery; combining all-digital content production and management with emerging semantic technologies; user-oriented use, access to and creation of content • Home environments:… new services and new forms of interactive digital content and services; access to information and management of knowledge

  11. ICT workprogramme • WP describes (high-level) objectives & priorities in 2007-08, sets the direction for the first series of EU projects (1,5-2 Beuro?) • time-to-WP: • phase 1 (consultations) Feb-Apr • phase 2 (consolidation) Apr-May • phase 3 (workprogramme) Jun-Jul • phase 4 (refine focus & instruments) Jul-Sept • phase 5 (spread the word) Oct-Dec => IST conference, Nov • elicit input from ALL relevant circles: • research themes: • continuity vs. new directions • emerging challenges vs. gaps & failures in FP6 • long term research vs. development & validation • relationships vis-a-vis adjacent topical areas • stakeholders: S&T communities, ICT and Media industry, user industries • instruments: collaborative platforms, shared infrastructures …

  12. Process • roundtables & working visits: • ISWC’05: Semantic Web, progress & prospects • EWIMT’05: Interface between Multimedia & Knowledge R&D • selected research centres … • populate the research agenda • Content (26-27 Jan) + Knowledge (2-3 Feb) • build “model”, fill gaps, refine S&T content • Knowledge (2-3 Mar) + Content (8-9 Mar) • consolidate results & discuss working drafts • 5[-6] Apr (tbc) • and then a long series of revisions … • EC internal then also national reps & experts

  13. We need your input, now! • project deliverables relating to research roadmap, technology foresight, market trends, etc. • outcome of project events - workshops, seminars … addressing ‘hard’ or emerging research themes • ad-hoc contributions (by email): • for each candidate research track: • state problem & result / advances (granularity: ~ 20-50 Meuro) • expected impact (scientific, technological, economic) • time-to-maturity & application space • why public intervention, why at EU level • timeframe:research starting in 2008 and delivering ‘exploitable’ results 4-5 years later, so …think 2012 and beyond

  14. Possible changes in emphasis • from document to human centric approach: documents, interaction, ambient information… • from focus on automation to balanced mix of people, data & tools:- cater for human & organisational factors- test technology against real(istic) data volumes • integrate Web 2.0, addresssocial networks, participative & consumer-produced content … • keep pushing towards non-textual content analysis, place more emphasis on multi-modal analysis & interpretation • preserve data integration as well as application / process related aspects • encourage integration & consolidation: architectures & middleware • early experimentation & feedback; more focused attack on selected user profiles and/or application tasks/domains • … and more!

  15. Linking research towider context • reach out: awareness & dissemination beyond specialist research circles • first use: early access to technology, trials & use cases • infrastructure: public outcomes, sharing pre-competitive results … • and in general any other measure that can • add value to research • ease and speed up its uptake

  16. Want to contribute? www.cordis.lu/fp7/ your input (1 page per topic): • infso-e2@cec.eu.int inquiries: • stefano.bertolo@cec.eu.int • albert.gauthier@cec.eu.int

  17. This meeting • no more projects till Jan 2008 • hence up to you (!) to demonstrate good use of public monies • and ... adequate return on investment • powerful lobbies at work: must show results & broaden “our” constituency • a huge challenge ahead: • community building, “branding” & reach-out • build new partnerships across disciplines • stimulate dialogue with industry (IT, telcos, media) • get users on board • be known, be credible; exploit synergies, avoid duplication • hence … a coherent and effective Dissemination & Awareness campaign

  18. Reminders • main target groups: • your peers • actual or prospective sponsors & buyers(your management, government & research agencies, high-end users, IT & telcos) • politicians & journalists • different means for different purposes & target groups: • print & electronic publications (S&T as well as PR) • conferences & exhibitions (S&T as well industrial/professional) • scientific papers & topical seminars (involving outsiders) • project’s open days (prospective sponsors & buyers) • training & knowledge-spreading (involving outsiders) … • collaborative multi-party projects, hence “co-authoring” • acknowledge EU support (DG INFSO / IST Pgme) • reconcile tension between own organisation, consortium & “field” at large (which is OUR concern)

  19. Questions? Overview of your inputs Practicalities
