  3. Devastation in Europe • Describe what you see: Constant bombing and shelling cities turned to rubble • Country-side destroyed • People left homeless • Refugees of concentration camps • Where did they go? • 40 million killed in Europe, 50 million homeless

  4. Devastation in Europe • What is the land outside cities usually used for? • What do you think happened to agriculture? • Disrupted, • During the war, Men fought and women worked in the factories • Transportation systems destroyed • What about the availability of food in Europe?

  5. Post war government in Europe • Who was to blame? Leaders for the war • Which countries wanted new leadership? -Germany, Italy, and France

  6. Nuremberg Trials • Held in Nuremberg, Germany • Led by an International Military Tribunal representing 23 countries • Purpose? To try Nazi leaders with crimes against humanity

Occupied Japan • Demilitirization-disbanding the Japanese military • Macarthur brought Japanese war criminals to trial • Democratization-the process of a country becoming democratic..-leaders are elected by the people • May 3, 1947-Japan becomes a constitutional monarchy-The emperor does not lead Japan anymore, elected officials do

  10. Changes for Japan • How did the Emperor’s role change? • No longer seen as divine or godly • Less power • Who could vote? All citizens over 20, including women • Article-9-Japan could no longer declare war unless attacked first
