  2. Lomax Magnet Elementary • Vision: The Lomax community will develop the individual talents and strengths of each student. • Mission: Lomax will build a community of active thinking and learning citizens through: exploration, enrichment, electives and expeditions.

  3. Language Arts • Reading and writing integrated • New standards (LAFS) • Text coding • Text evidence • Spelling, grammar, capitalization • Skills: main idea, theme, cause and effect, etc. • Assessment • Writing: Persuasive or informative • Reading: extended response, multiple choice • Paper based this year

  4. Math • Students will need to accurately calculate equations, understand concepts not just memorize answers. • It is essential that students are fluent with math facts in order to be successful with problem solving. • Students will need to accurately select the best mathematical concept or equation to solve real-world problems. • We are now asking students to explain their mathematical thinking, to represent their ideas and to make sense of other people’s ideas.

  5. Science • Instruction focuses on physical, earth/space, and life science. • Within these science divisions, the scientific method is used as tool to help students process new information and encourage their own sense of inquiry. • Students keep a science notebook to take notes and record their observations. • Science fair is starting! Students have brought home papers explaining the breakdown and due dates for the different stages of the science fair process.

  6. Social Studies • Focus: Florida • Famous Floridians • Geography • History • Culture • Attractions

  7. Reminders • Agendas • Need to be signed nightly • Used to communicate daily with parents (behaviors, homework, etc.) • Purple Folders • Sent home every Wednesday • Include important papers from administration, PTA, etc. • Attendance • Instruction begins promptly at 8:20. We appreciate your help with making sure students are in the room, unpacked and ready to go by then. • Homework • Reading (Read 20-30min/activity) and math (worksheet)

  8. Uniforms: gold, white or purple polo with navy or khaki bottoms. • Monday: college shirt regular uniform bottoms • Friday: BLUE jeans and a spirit shirt • Early Release: Monday at 1:30
