  1. Mt Martha Primary School Oval Refurbishment Project 2009

  2. The Facilities Committee The Facilities Committee is a sub-group of the School Council. Its job is to maintain and/or improve the facilities at Mt Martha Primary School. The Facilities Committee meet each month to plan and implement changes to the school grounds.

  3. Recent projects completed Last year (2008) some of the projects the Facilities Committee worked on included: • Organised and ran numerous working bees. • Relocated the cubby house to the prep playground. • Replaced the corrugated iron walls on the ‘Maintenance Shed’. • Mulched and weeded garden beds, pruned trees and did other general gardening duties.

  4. Survey • Additionally, the Facilities Committee conducted a survey to determine the Mt Martha School Community’s priorities for the school grounds. The results demonstrated an overwhelming need for the oval to be improved.

  5. Oval Improvement • Given that staff, students and parents indicated that the state of the oval needs addressing, Facility Committee members have researched the various options available to us. These include: • Various natural grass options with use of water tanks and bores to sustain the grass • Synthetic grass • Gravel • Rubber • Sand

  6. Which option do we choose? • An independent consultant, Ed Neil, was sought to facilitate a meeting to discuss the efficacy of each surface option. • Analysis demonstrated that synthetic grass would be the best option.

  7. Making this project happen • Given the large scale of the oval re-surfacing project the Facilities Commitee has decided to employ an independent Project Manager to oversee it. Additionally, the school is seeking an overall design for the oval and surroundings. This may include an improvement of the Jogging Track, an upgraded Year 5 and 6 Playground and possible repositioning and building of other facilities.

  8. How soon will this project happen? • The Facilities Committee has been working on this project for more than 10 months. At this stage, it is envisaged that the project will be completed within the next 12 months.
