  8. Let’s get started on your hiring paperwork! • The following documents are attached to the left side of your folder: • I9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form (information on back side) • Authorization Agreement for Electronic Deposits • Confidentiality Agreement for Student Workers

  9. How to locate you because of inclement weather or unexpected closings… This information is extremely important!

  10. Signing in Sign in and out daily by writing the time you came into work and the time you left. These forms are placed in the sign in book at the circulation desk. Write Your Name at the top of EACH sheet! You will also be responsible for entering your time on Webtime. You will receive training on Webtime on your first day of work.

  11. Write your name here

  12. It is YOUR responsibility to report missing hours or discrepancies on your paycheck as soon as they are found. Michelle has 70+ students that she must complete the paperwork for in order for each of you to get paid. Make sure the sign in sheets are done daily. Webtime entry must match the sign in book – if it does not, the sign in book is the default and Webtime will be changed!

  13. In-depth training will begin with your first shift…

  14. Fun & Games! You will be asked to complete different games that we use as learning tools! For example: these 2 games • LC Easy – teaches you about the Library of Congress call numbers • ChangeMaker@funbrain.com – teaches making correct change We also like to provide special incentives during the semester!

  15. Now for some basic information you will need to know to work in the library!

  16. Cell Phone UseFor Student Assistants Cell phones must be OFF while working and not on your person. Students should NEVER answer their cell phone while working. Feel free to give the Library phone number to parents or for emergencies.

  17. While on the subject… Please take out your cell phones… Program the following number into your cell phone: (843) 349-2400 You will need this number to call when you are going to be late or unable to come in. We will not accept the excuse that you did not have the number so KEEP IT WITH YOU!!

  18. Check your Email, But not during work. Your supervisor will send you important information through your Coastal email! You can locate your Coastal mailbox at mail.coastal.edu

  19. DON’T DO IT!NO EXCEPTIONS The only website you have permission to view is the Kimbel Library homepage. You may use the Kimbel Library homepage to help patrons find library materials. BUT… If there is a reference librarian ALWAYS send the patron to him/her.

  20. The Library’ Dress Code: • Hats of any kind are not permitted at work • No headphones or ear buds • Undergarments should be UNDER your GARMENTS (We don’t want to see them!) • NO Cleavage – top or bottom/male or female • You may be asked to go to offices around campus. Are you presentable enough to go to the President’s office?

  21. HOMEwork? Not AT work. Reading or doing homework at the circulation desk is not permitted. There is always something to do - just ask your supervisor!! Always check-in with your supervisor when you get to work! We appreciate “self-starters”… However, it is important for you to let your supervisor know where you will be and what you will be doing!!

  22. Stay in Your Area… While working, students should not be “hanging out” in the circulation office. All Staff Desks & Computers are off limits. If you are working in circulation you should be standing at the desk ready and available to help patrons!

  23. Need a day off? Let your supervisor know via the blue schedule change slip (located in the sign-in drawer). Make a genuine effort to find someone to work your shift Approval must come from the supervisor with whom you would be working. No Shows will NOT be tolerated.

  24. Need a Break?! If you are working a shift that is 4 hours or more, you are entitled to a break! PLEASE remind the supervisor if you are not given a break! There usually isn’t enough time to leave and get food so you may bring your own! There is a student refrigerator and cabinet in the break room that you are all welcome to use! The break room is NOT a study area.

  25. What to do?! What to dooo?! If you are ever unsure of what to do ALWAYS ask! Your supervisors and the reference librarians or senior library assistants are available to help you! Feel free to ask returning students about policies and procedures!

  26. Perks of the Job! • No fines for overdue items • Cookie Fridays • Student Brunch during Finals Week • Not a perk: No Free copies/printouts

  27. Basic Security Gate Info When the security alarm goes off…. • We do not pass bags around the gate. • We cannot search inside bags. The patron must remove items from their own bags. • Don’t assume someone is stealing -Textbooks, clothing, and some electronic equipment may trigger alarm. • You are NOT expected to deal with problem patrons at the gate or at the desk. ASK a supervisor for assistance immediately.

  28. Working at Night? • All closing staff and student assistants exit through the back door TOGETHER. • Do not walk alone to your car or dorm after dark. Security officers are available to escort you.

  29. We are now going to take you on a tour of the library • And then Michelle will help you determine what your schedule will be. • When you are finished with the tour and your schedule – we will have pizza available for you in the break room!
