  2. What is a competency? • An extension of the agencies general vision • A complex combination • Knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA’s) • Demonstrated by organization’s members • Critical to effective and efficient function of an organization Nelson, Essien, Latoff and Wiesner (1997)

  3. How can they be used? • Update/revise job description • New employee orientation • Employee training • Self assessment…am I able to…?

Course Design and Development: Steps • Utilize previous needs assessment findings • Identify target audience 45 local health departments and MDCH Other • Identify course faculty Academics Public health practitioners • Convene curriculum subcommittee, including faculty, staff and target audience

Course Design and Development: Steps • Identify competencies for each training • Create objectives from competencies and needs assessment to develop training content • Determine teaching methods based on objectives and adult learning principals • Finalize course logistics (location, time, date, registration, marketing, CEUs) • Develop evaluation instrument
