  1. SLT Workshop September 2013

  2. Agenda

  3. Objectives • Provide clarity around the SLT’s • Membership • Decision Making Process • Responsibilities • Share SLT Best Practices • Additional Resources and References Materials

  4. Membership

  5. SLT Operating Norms • Will work to operate in an environment marked by mutual support and respect. • Will make decisions by consensus.

  6. Decision Making Process

  7. Responsibilities Overview

  8. CSC Responsibilities

  9. SLT Responsibilities • Review data and collaborate in the development of UIP. • Review and collaborate on the design of the school’s schedule, including but not limited to: • student schedule • teacher Schedule • professional development plan and schedule within the workday and/or work week • other operation and professional functions (e.g., committee meetings, faculty/staff meetings, grade-level meetings, vertical team meetings, departmental meetings, planning with instructional personnel, data teams)

  10. SLT Responsibilities • SLT shall consider other professional development and teacher obligations when scheduling professional development time. • Review and collaborate on the implementation of the District Instructional Plan as it specifically applies to classrooms and grades at the school this include prioritizing and sequencing activities within the teacher work week. • Collaborate and identify strategies for increasing enrollment at the school. • Collaborate to develop communication strategies for regularly reporting student progress to parents. • Collaborate to implement best instructional practices.

  11. Scenario Activity

  12. Scenario 1 • At the beginning of the year, the principal realizes that the number of students enrolled for the school year is far less than the projections that were given to her the prior spring when she received the school budget. She realizes that due to the decreased enrollment, she will need to reduce the budget by $70,000. This could mean material or staff reductions. • In this scenario, what is the role of the CSC? What is the role of the SLT? • How will the staff be aware of the conversations and decisions?

  13. Scenario 2 • The enrollment of the school has decreased over the past three years at Fischer School. Each year it decreased by about 20 students, making cuts in the budget necessary. After three stressful years, the school has decided to take a proactive approach in planning projects on how to increase the number of students. • What is the role of the staff, the SLT, and the CSC in this endeavor? • How might this conversation look in your school?

  14. Scenario 3 • The TCAP scores have come out again and there were many conversations with grades 3 – 12 about individual student growth and needs. The parents of the ECE – grade 2 students continue to want more information on the progress their students are making. Is has been a long conversation with the staff about how to balance the primary report with the upper grade information. • How should this conversation be supported by the SLT? CSC? Staff? • Discuss how that might look in your school.

  15. Scenario 4 • A parent has asked you why there are no parents on the SLT. • What would your answer be? How can you back up your answer? • What next steps would you take after having this conversation with a parent?

  16. Scenario 5 • End of the year target information is due to the Instructional Superintendent in two weeks. You have had lots of conversation and meetings about the UIP, but agreeing on the specific targets has not occurred and actually continues to be a tough conversation. • What are the responsibilities of the SLT? The CSC? • What challenges would this present for your school?

  17. Scenario 6 • It is time to look at the UIP milestones and determine growth in each specific strategy. • Where should this conversation start? • What is your rationale for this decision? • How should this be supported? SLT? CSC? • What might this look like timeline wise at your school?

  18. Scenario 7 • The SLT is working on next year’s schedule. They are conflicted with offering music every day for 20-minutes versus music every other day from 40-minutes. If they have music every day, there will not be enough hours in the day for data team planning. If they schedule music every other day for a longer period, this would open up the schedule for data teams to meet and plan. • How involved should the CSC be in this decision? What would be the challenges in your school

  19. Scenario 8 • The UIP is listed as a responsibility for SLT and CSC. • How will you distinguish the differences, the similarities of the responsibilities, and define the specific actions and work for each of the committees? • What part will your entire staff have in the process? • How do you see the responsibilities in January or April in relationship to the UIP?

  20. Best Practices

  21. Best Practices • Revisit membership annually • Establish CSC and SLT within the first two-weeks of school • Discuss bylaws and establish norms for collaborative meetings • Communicate agendas and outcomes to school community • Post meeting agenda and minutes on website or have hard copies available • Communicate when meetings are scheduled • Clearly define scope and roles to members • Create a forum for school community to raise concerns and ask questions with each of the groups
