Where did it get its name? • The name Blu-ray comes from the technology, which uses a blue-violet laser to read and write data. • The name is a combination of "Blue" (blue-violet laser) and "Ray" (optical ray). • The “e” was removed in order for the name to be trademarked
Who developed Blu-ray? • Blu-ray Disc Association • Consists of over 170 different companies • Board of Directors made up of 18 different companies • Large companies included on the Board of Directors: • Apple Computer, Inc. • Dell, Inc. • LG Electronics, Inc. • Mitsubishi Electronics, Inc. • Sony Corporation • Warner Bros. Entertainment • Walt Disney Pictures
What is the benefit? • Amount of storage space • 25GB on single-layer • 50GB on duel-layer • Makes high definition available on disc • Over 9 hours of HD storage capacity on the 50GB disc • Backwards compatible • Blu-ray players also able to play DVDs • Near perfect visual effects • Playstation 3 will use Blu-ray technology
