Engineering Systems at USC • AGENDA • Systems Architecting and Engineering (SAE) Program has been the primary USC participant in CESUN since the creation of CESUN in 2003. • Stan will give an update on the SAE Program. • Stan and Jim will describe the unique arrangement that the SAE Program has with the Epstein Department of ISE. • There are many other engineering systems-related activities at USC within the Viterbi School of Engineering and beyond. • Today we will introduce you to a number of these other activities and show how they are related.

M.S. in Systems Architecting & Engineering (MSSAE) Background • MSSAE program was created in 1987-8 • Response to needs of aerospace and defense industries • Founded by Eb Rechtin, former Director of DARPA, CEO of Aerospace Corporation and VP of Xerox Corporation. • From 1994 to 2003 Elliot Axelband, former VP of Hughes Aircraft led the program. • Since 2003 Stan Settles has been the program director.

M.S. in Systems Architecture & Engineering (MSSAE) Background • Inherently Multidisciplinary Approach • Domain specialization • Students specialize in a specific engineering discipline (e.g., Systems Engineer in Astronautics) • Professors and students must both have significant academic and industrial experience credentials • Most MSSAE instructors are from the management and executive ranks of aerospace and defense industries • Systems Architecting expects students to have a minimum of 3 years professional experience

USC MSSAE Program • 10 courses required for the Master of Science degree • 4 required core courses • 1 technical management course • 1 general technical course • 4 courses from technical specialization area • No thesis or qualifying exam required USC Viterbi School of Engineering routinely evaluates requests for individually-tailored MSSAE programs.

USC MSSAE Program Components • 4 required core courses: • SAE 549 – Systems Architecting • SAE 541 – Systems Engineering Theory and Practice • ISE 460 or 561 or 563 – Engineering Economy One design experience course • AME 527 – Elements of Vehicle and Energy Systems Design • CSCI 577a Software Engineering • Other course, subject to approval of the program director • 1 technical management course from an area such as: • Project management • Team design • Decision theory • Planning, scheduling and cost control • Quality improvement methods • Business modeling and simulation

USC MSSAE Program Components • 1 general technical course from an area such as: • Systems architecting directed study • Software engineering • Software management and economics • Advanced topics in systems engineering • Statistics of simulation • Database management • Decision support systems • Political process • Risk management

USC MSSAE Program Components • 4 courses from one of the following technical specialization areas: • Aerospace and Mechanical Systems • Artificial Intelligence/Neural Networks • Astronautics • Automation and Control Systems • Communication and Signal Processing • Computational Fluid & Solid Mechanics • Computer and Information Systems • Computer Security • Construction • Dynamics & Control • Engineering Management • Manufacturing Systems • Net-Centric Systems • Software Process Architecting • System Safety and Security If a desired specialization track is not listed above, USC’s SAE Program Director can work with the student to create one that is aligned with the student’s interests/career goals

Industry Relations • USC SAE Industrial Advisory Board • Consists of representatives from companies and organizations sponsoring students • USC’s MSSAE program has been selected by Boeing, Delphi, and United Technologies Corporation (UTC) as the provider of choice of graduate level Systems Engineering degrees for their employees • USC was awarded funding from TRW for development of Mission Systems Engineering Advanced Topics module; Module included in current advanced Systems Engineering course

Centralized Resources for Doctoral Students • 2007 Doctoral Fellowships • 127 total offers to Viterbi students yielding 53 incoming PhD fellowship students • Annenberg: 8 (restricted to EE-Systems communications students) • Provost’s: 21 (including Mu) • Viterbi: 24 (including Prats, Chen, Zhong) • 21 Annenberg fellowships for continuing students (though who is eligible remains unclear). • 2008 Doctoral Fellowships • Provost’s Fellowships • Regular and diversity categories. • Departments submit nominations directly to the Graduate School. • Stipend is $28K per year for two years; with Dept. guarantees of another two years at $28K stipend, including 50% TA/RA support. • Six Epstein ISE offers approved, including one WiSE top-off award. • Viterbi Fellowships: Four Epstein ISE offers approved, including one WiSE top-off award. • Multiple Department Teaching Assistantships are being offered with objective of funding four new TAs at the maximum level (50% time awards).

Earning a Degree via DEN DEN students are no different from on-campus students! • DEN students meet the same admissions requirements • DEN students complete the same course requirements to earn a degree • DEN students adhere to the same academic standards • The diploma earned is the same University of Southern California (USC) Master of Science degree

DEN’s E-Learning System • Currently 130+ courses are available online every fall and spring semester, continually expanding upon addition of new online degrees; approximately 30+ courses available in the summer semester • High-speed Internet access (DSL/Cable minimum), Windows Media Player (downloadable for free) • All DEN courses are available on the Internet live and on-demand. Downloading and podcasting are now available. • Students can phone into studio classrooms with questions during class, or participate in chat or threaded discussions • Lectures are archived and available for viewing for the entire semester
