  2. Sensory Memory • 1st stage of memory -immediate, initial recordings -very brief…memory traces last for a fraction of a second (3 kinds of sensory)

  3. Sensory Memory continued… • Iconic memory-mental pictures we form that are like snapshots. (accurate / extremely brief / fraction of a second) • Eidetic memory-ability to remember visual stimuli over long periods of time. (photographic memory) • Echoic memory-mental traces of sounds (echoes-held for fraction of second, but can last for several seconds) **hearing versus seeing to remember p.161**

  4. Short-Term Memory • 2nd stage, also called “working memory” • Paying attention to iconic and echoic memories held ever so briefly in a sensory register… it will remain there after the memory trace has faded. **examples p.161**

  5. Short – Term Memory continued… • Primacy and Recency Effects- Tendency to recall the initial items in a series of items & the tendency to recall the last items in series • Chunking-The organization of items into familiar or manageable units. (OTTFFSSENT) • Interference-When new information appears in short-term memory and take the place of what is already there. (limited shelf space) **experiment p.163**

  6. Long-Term Memory • 3rd and final stage • If you want to remember something more than briefly, you need to take certain steps: -Mechanical repetition / Maintenance rehearsal -Elaborative rehearsal – relating information to information that you already know
