Nature vs. Nurture (genes vs. environment) Environment can affect more than just behavior! Why does Marlin look so worried?
Phenotype is often the result of interactions between genotype and environment. • Examples of Physical Differences: • The sex of sea turtles depends on both genes (sex chromosomes) and the environment (egg temperature). - Human height is an example of a phenotype strongly affected by the environment (and of course by genes too).
The environment interacts with genotype. • Many fish can switchsex: NemoNema? • A little known but fascinating ability of the Clown fish is its ability to switch sex. The reproducing female is on the top of the hierarchy followed by the mating male. Below them are a bunch of non-mating males. But, if the female dies, the whole hierarchy gets disrupted. The mating male then morphs into a female and chooses a partner from the various non-mating males!
