  11. Activities: Develop and Apply Purpose: to identify the components of the introductory paragraph of your literary analysis essay Tasks: • Read and annotated the handout on Introductory/Opening Paragraphs • Notes the one I have annotated for you • With a partner, examine another one; notice that it contains the 4 components but in its unique way • Then, examine the final one; notice that it contains the 4 components but in its unique way Outcome: Write your own intro! Success: the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. Success, for some, is only about self. It is achieving wealth, respect, or even fame. For others, however, success is seemingly as simple as supporting and helping others. Arthur Miller’s play Death of a Salesman, set in 1940s New York, shares the final days of the mentally fatigued husband and father and unsuccessful salesman Willy Lowman. Miller also shows Willy’s wife, Linda, a levelheaded woman, trying desperately to stabilize her husband’s life. Linda’s enduring patience and undying love enable her to make conscious decisions to withhold truths from Willy, as she tries to protect him from several harsh realities. Ironically, Linda's reluctance to give Willy the hard truth does not prevent him from committing suicide due to false pride and delusions. Arthur Miller seems to suggest that love and success require truth and struggle. Through character development, as well as use of flashback and symbolismin his drama, Miller conveys that achieving success may create both internal and external conflicts that can tear a family apart.

  12. Thesis: A Variation on Key Terms Through the pear tree passage, the deadly hurricane episode and the final coming home discussion with Phoeby, Hurston presents three pivotal moments in Janie’s progression from a naïve, young girl seeking love to a self assured, self loving woman.

  13. Activities: Develop and Apply • Purpose: to identify the components of a concluding paragraph for your literary analysis essay Tasks: • Read and annotated the handout on Concluding Paragraphs • Notes the one I have annotated for you • With a partner, examine another one; notice that it contains the components but in its unique way • Then, examine the final one; notice that it contains the components but in its unique way Outcome: Write your own conclusion! The reader can learn many things from Elena’s experience. In “American History,” Cofer presents not only the struggle that a normal adolescent faces but also the intensified struggle that so many immigrants still face. In our high schools today, we see students facing the added pressures of social media and the increased need for “anti-bullying” campaigns. Across the world, we also see immigration as a controversial topic. We see those who believe in “walling” others out, whether it be from relationships, businesses or entire countries, and others who push for more inclusion and acceptance. Obviously, life is full of ups as well as downs, and it certainly is not always fair. Confrontations, whether based on race, religion, gender or ethnicity, are a reality in our world. Sooner or later, this reality confronts everyone, and who we are as human beings is reflected in how we handle it. Readers see Elena’s response to the negativity and bias she experiences; she does not give up hope for her future. Thus, whatever one’s beliefs, ultimately what matters most is that we can acknowledge the differences among us and hold onto thoughts for a better life for ourselves and others.
