3. What is Child Sex Tourism? Child sex tourism is the sexual use of children by people who travelfrom their home to have sexual contact with children.

4. Child Sex Tourism It is a form of violence against children, and amounts to forced labour and a form of slavery. NBChildren are girls and boys from the age of 0 to 18

5. Child Sex Tourists can be… Child sex tourists can be domestic travelers or they can be international tourists.

Why are we concerned There will be many tourists in South Africa for World Cup Most tourists will be males Child Sex Tourism is an organized international business and they are targeting South Africa Our children will be on holiday for a month while parents work Child Sex Tourists target vulnerable children and offer them money Child Sex Tourism

7. Offenders use Tourism Services Like any tourists before travel begins, offenders use the services of travel agents and tour operators (often online booking site).

8. Offenders use Tourism Services Transportation services, such as airlines, buses, trains, taxis, and others, facilitate travel by ill-intentioned tourists.

9. Offenders use Tourism Services Hotels, guesthouses, resorts, cruise ships, and other services involving accommodation are used as venues of exploitation.

10. Who do they target? Victims tend to come from disadvantaged backgrounds: Poor Living on street / beach Low-level education From dysfunctional or broken family Abused in home But also: Middle-class background Influenced by financial gain - often as a result of peer pressure Unaware of dangers / consequences

15. How do they find the children? Travel: Organised tours Independenttravel Access to children: Third party (taxi drivers, waiters, vendors) Direct contact with children (street / beach children, organisations working with children)

16. How do they get the children? Payment: To third party (pimp, brothel owner, family member, accommodation owner) Directly to child Grooming process/emotional engagement with child

17. Impact on the Child Long-term psychological (and possibly physical) traumatisation Health risks – especially HIV/AIDS and STDs Stigmatisation by family and close community Economic difficulties leading back to prostitution Loss of self-esteem

18. Child Protection Policy and Procedure Steps to follow if staff suspect sexual abuse or exploitation of a child: If you believe a child is being abused or exploited on the premises of the hotel, first alert the manager who will contact local police as the situation is an emergency. If the suspected offender and child have left the hotel premises, you should still alert your manager and the local police of their suspicion. Whether reporting to local police or to a local child rights organisation it is also important to pass this information on to the embassy of the suspected tourist.

What to Look Out for Tourists that are seen … Talking with vulnerable children regularly (street children, working children) Alone with child Giving money / gifts / food to families or children Saying how much he or she loves children Inquiring about situation of children Checking in to the hotel with a child who is clearly not a family relation

20. Protect your own children and if you suspect them, look out for Physical indicators of child abuse: Bite marks. Bruises on uncommonly injured body surfaces. Lacerations. Burns. Human hand marks. Multiple injuries at different stages of healing. Evidence of poor care/failure to thrive. Child Sex Tourism

21. Protect your own children and if you suspect them, look out for Behavioural indicators of child abuse: Avoids physical contact with others. Wears clothing to purposely conceal injury, such as long sleeves. Gives different versions about where he/she has been or how was injured Has difficulty getting along with others. Plays aggressively and often hurts peers. Complains of pain upon movement or contact. Has a lot of money and won’t say where he/she got money from Child Sex Tourism

Who to Report A Tourist Trying to Buy a Child for Sexual Exploitation A tourist who approaches hotel staff, or even other tourists asking where he or she can pay for sex with young children A Tourist Sexually Abusing a Child A Person Selling a ChildOften, it is go-betweens working in the tourism industry (taxi-drivers, bus drivers, etc) who propose sex with children to tourists.

25. Tips! Remember that you are doing the right thing! Do not be scared or nervous when asking questions or for ID. It is normal procedure. Get help immediately
