Fluids: a substance that can flow and take shape of its container. Gases – can be compressed Liquids – diffuse slowly (spread out evenly)
Solid Form of matter with definite shape and volume. What are some solids in this room? Particles of a solid are tightly packed together.
Solid If heated, a solid expands slightly. Solid is not defined by how dense something is or its hardness. Marble vs. wax
Liquid Form of matter that flows, has constant volume, and takes the shape of its container Examples of liquids in this room?
Liquid Particles are not rigid – are less closely packed. Can move past one another. Allows liquid to flow. Particles also expand when heated.
Gas Form of matter that flows to conform to shape of container and fills the entire volume of container. Examples in this room?
Gas Particles are far apart from each other. Because of space between particles, gases can be compressed.
Vapor Similar to gas but NOT the same. Gas is a substance that is naturally in gaseous state at room temperature. Vapor is gaseous state of a substance that is a solid or liquid at room temperature. Examples?
