  7. ThursdayMarch5,2009 (3/5/2009) WARM UP Order the following standards based on how comfortable you are with them on the FCAT. For example, if I am very comfortable with Plot Element questions, but very uncomfortable with Main Idea questions, then I would place Plot Elements as #1 and Main Idea as #10. Plot Elements (Freytag, characters, etc.) Cause and Effect Compare and Contrast (similarities/differences) Main Idea Organizational Patterns (flashback/chrono.) Author’s Purpose (scare tactic, bandwagon, etc.) Research Tools (dictionary, thesaurus) Multiple Sources Validity and Reliability Context Clues Time Given: 3minutes

  8. ThursdayMarch5,2009 (3/5/2009) NO NOTES Today’s Objectives and Standards (TOS) The student will be able to: Identify the difference between main idea and supporting details by taking notes. Differentiate between main idea and supporting details by completing a story with the class and answering questions at the end. Apply all previous notes by completing a mock FCAT exam in under 60 minutes. Standards: All previous standards listed on the warm up.

  9. FCAT Bootcamp, The Last Day NO NOTES Welcome to the last day of FCAT Bootcamp. You made it this far and I’m proud of your accomplishments. However, how you act today will determine what we do on Monday… Another practice exam or Something else? Any intelligent questions before we get started?

  10. FCAT Bootcamp, The Last Day NO NOTES Today’s standard—our final one is going to be MAIN IDEA. We’ll start with some notes, then practice a story together—you’ll answer questions after we finish reading. You’ll take some brief notes on UNRAAVEL. You’ll practice all of the standards we’ve covered these past two weeks by doing a mock FCAT Practice test. 50-60 minutes [today] VS. 3 hours (or 6 for both days) [3/10 and 3/11]

  11. Main Idea TAKE NOTES There is always one (1) main idea, which is supported by details. Like a house, or an upside-down umbrella.

  12. Main Idea TAKE NOTES For main idea questions, the following must be true: The answer must be about the WHOLE passage/poem. The answer CANNOT BE about ONE paragraph or section.

  13. Main Idea NO NOTES Questions look like: If you could give the story a title, what would it be? What is the main idea? What is the passage/poem’s theme?

  14. Main Idea NO NOTES Guided practice: Turn to pg. 94 (Animal Reaction) Hampton’s Popcorn Answer questions at end (ALL) in notebook. (15 minutes) We’ll review after the timer goes off.

  15. UNRAAVEL NO NOTES U N R A A V E L

  16. UNRAAVEL NO NOTES Underline the title. Now predict the passage. Run through and number the paragraphs. Are you reading the questions? Are the important words circled? Venture and read the passage. Eliminate the wrong answers. Let the questions be answered.

  17. Hampton’s Bootleg, or UNRAAVEL’ing YARN TAKE NOTES You should number the paragraphs. Always read the questions first. Read the passage. Now, eliminate the wrong answers.

  18. Hampton’s Bootleg, or UNRAAVEL’ing YARN NO NOTES Try the steps in YARN today—your score will benefit—TRUST ME.

  19. All Standards NO NOTES Turn to pg. 249. Work on Practice Test 2 (All Questions) You have 60 minutes. How seriously you take this assignment impacts what we do on Monday…and will tell me what is still lacking in your education. Questions?

  20. All Standards NO NOTES Turn to pg. 249. Work on Practice Test 2 (All Questions) You have 60 minutes. GOOD LUCK!
