Assignment 6a Strengthening MY Professional Career Position Joseph Gamble
Offensive Strategic Career Moves • Meaning that proactive efforts are being executed to coincide with my strategic career plan. • I will be pursuing other avenues to find employment before I graduate as my next strategic career move. • In the past year, I have increased the quality of my professional portfolio as well as became more proficient in other programming languages – these were both offensive moves. • However, I should consider taking a part-time position in order to strengthen my IT work experience as well as begin steps to becoming a PMP.
My First-Mover Advantage • There is certainly a need in the marketplace for a young professional who has technical IT skills as well as understanding of practical business operations. • My options include outright acquiring the position as an IT administrator and potentially making a good salary or taking “less than I’m worth”, but it is far more likely that I will start out in a position of less corporate responsibility (such as a software developer). • I believe leveraging my educational qualifications in order to start higher up on the corporate chain and closer to an IT administrative position will give me a significant competitive advantage.
Defensive Strategic Career Moves • Acting quickly and being responsive to internal and external changes that may threaten the strength of my career strategy. • I have increased my GPA and conducted more practice interviews in order to make sure to stay competitive with those in my field. • I will need to seriously consider keeping my social media and all sites linking my personal life to my professional life in good and professional demeanor. • I will need to make sure to stay as up to date as possible with the latest technological trend-interests of the industry.
Strategic Career Alliances/Personal Value Chain • I could use the companies that I have performed web-design work for as potential clients. • My classmates and other potential peers my age and in my fraternity can possibly help me with career placement. • My personal value chain is very strong, and when focused on business activities creates a lot of value through my own technical skills, managerial and entrepreneurial experience, and overall practical knowledge breadth.
Outsourcing • Taking activities that are in my value chain and paying someone else to do them because my opportunity or explicit cost is smaller than my actual value production. • I have started sending my laundry off to the cleaners instead of doing them myself, because I can pay off the laundry bill AND make money in the time I would normally spend doing laundry. • I am eating fast food more and using coupons, because I tend to cook rather extravagant – eating out ends up saving me more time and leaves my pocketbook less empty. • Both of these examples of outsourcing increase my profitability and allow me to dedicate more time to seeking employment opportunities.
