Background History • A Mexican holiday celebrated all throughout Mexico. • It takes place on two separate days which are November 1st and November 2nd. • November 1st- Day of the Innocents and Angels it honors children and infants that had passed away. • November 2nd- Day of the dead honors all of the adults that have passed away. • People go to cemeteries to be with the dead and departed souls, they also build altars holding the deads favorite foods and memories, toys are brought for the little kids that died. • Day of the dead was actually started in Celtic time and Day of the Dead is most often represented by a skull. • Plans about this day are considered all year before these days.

  3. History Continued..... The Aztecs and other Mesoamerican civilizations kept skulls as trophies and displayed them during the ritual. The skulls were used to symbolize death and rebirth. The skulls were used to honor the dead, whom the Aztecs and other Mesoamerican civilizations believed came back to visit during the monthlong ritual. Unlike the Spaniards, who viewed death as the end of life, the natives viewed it as the continuation of life. Instead of fearing death, they embraced it. To them, life was a dream and only in death did they become truly awake.

November 1st • It is not supposed to be a sad day it is supposed to be a day for partying and remembering the souls of the children that have passed. • It is a bright and colorful day and has many different color smelling candles. • The death of a child is not thought of as a bad thing it is thought of them receiving another angel.

  5. November 2nd • Death is a celebration for the people of Mexico they celebrate the life that the person had lived. • The Aztecs believed it was considered a blessing to die in childbirth, battle or human sacrifice, for these assured the victim a desirable destination in the afterlife.

  7. The Altar Before Dia de los Muertos, an area of the house is cleaned up and the furniture removed to make room for the altar. The altar consists at a minimum of a covered table, and usually a few crates or boxes are added to it and covered to create open shelves and other raised display areas. The coverings used can vary from plain to vibrantly colored oil cloth. The altar is then set up with the appropriate ofrendas (offerings) for Dia de los Muertos.

  9. Day of the Dead Food • Sugar Skulls-a sweet treat that is sometimes covered in icing. • Pan de Muerto-a bread eaten by the dead • Tamales • Guacamole • Grasshoppers • Chalupas • The food listed above is also set out for the souls.

  10. Pozole-Corn and Meat Soup • 1 1/4 lbs. hominy • 2 1/4 LB pig head (or pork loin) • 2 pig's feet • 1 whole onion, chopped • 1/2 whole head of garlic, peeled • 6 whole guajillo chiles, seeded and deveined • 3 whole ancho chiles, seeded and deveined • Kosher salt, to taste

  11. Pozole Continued.... • GARNISH: • 1 head romaine lettuce • 1 bunch radishes • 4 limes, quartered • 1 avocado, peeled and sliced • fried pork skins (chicharon) • 1 3/4 oz. powdered chiles pequin • 2/3 cup dried oregano • tostadas
