  1. “Models, Models, who has the Models?” Shawn Foster Corporate Engineering / CADD Manager The HNTB Companies

  2. V7 Definitions • V8 Definitions • What’s a model? • V8 review of references and models • Convergence of concepts • Where do you use what? What are we doing today?

  3. Reference files are design or raster files that can be attached and displayed, plotted, and (in the case of reference design files) used for construction purposes, but they cannot be modified in any way V7 Definition - References

  4. References 255 attachments per file Total cannot be more than 32 MEG Symbology is “all or nothing” V7 Limitations include…

  5. A reference attachment is a model attached to and displayed with the active model for plotting or construction purposes. A reference cannot be modified. You can attach, as a reference, a model that resides in either the open DGN file or some other DGN file V8 Definitions

  6. A model is a collection of design elements that share a common co-ordinate space in a manner similar to the familiar design plane… What’s a model?

  7. What’s a model? A model is a design area within a file

  8. What’s a model?

  9. You use Excel, don’t you? I repeat, what’s a model?

  10. FILE 1: File-specific settings Level Manager Symbology (Active Design Settings): Level, Colour, Style, Weight, Angle, scale Definitions: Dimension Styles, Levels, Multi-lines, Tag Sets, Text Styles, View Groups Colour: Table, Highlight, Selection Set, Pointer (Note:The colour table is stored in the file when you attach a specific one i.e. not the default.) Locks: ACS Plane, Axis, Boresite, Graphic Group, Level, Text Node Co-ordinate Readout, Fence Mode, Rendering Settings, Snaps, View Groups MODEL A: Model specific settings MODEL B Level display Drawn Elements Reference Files Locks: Isometric Saved Views View Attributes Working Units Grid Units Grid Configuration MODEL C Level display Drawn Elements Reference Files Locks: Isometric Saved Views View Attributes Working Units Grid Units Grid Configuration Level display You will view all levels for the entire file but can control what level is on or off in the individual view per model. Drawn Elements Reference Files Locks: Isometric Saved Views: Although they appear to be view-specific the settings for views 1 - 8 are stored in the model. View Attributes Working Units, Grid Units & Configuration What settings apply where? Image courtesy of www.eatyourcad.com

  11. Models have separate geometry • Models have separate working units • Models can be either Design or Sheet • Design: geometry • Sheet: “paper” • Models can be either 2D or 3D • Models have an Annotation Scale Creating a model

  12. Sheet Models can have a Sheet layout But that’s not all….

  13. Model – Working Units English and Metric Design in one unit of measurement…

  14. Model – Working Units Working Units and Models Self Reference into a separate Model, then change the working units

  15. Hold original and needed information in a model vs. a level or different file Holding information Models and Presentation

  16. And the Plot can be here, too Holding information Models and Presentation

  17. Using reference mirroring to save rework Holding information Models and Presentation

  18. Hold your design choices or alternatives in the same file. Alternates and choices Models and Presentation

  19. Drag and drop models for Reference Preset Model info for quick reference info placement Alternates and choices Models and Presentation

  20. What is Annotation Scale • Annotation Scale is a model setting that assigns a scale factor to the text and dimensions within the model • A Changeable setting • Allows for one “scale” of text in your text styles (real world size) and makes it easier to adjust Sheet Layout and Annotation Scale

  21. Multiple Scales on the same sheet • Difficult to manage? Sheet Layout and Annotation Scale

  22. Each drawn 1:1 with its own Annotation Scale Sheet Layout and Annotation Scale

  23. Referenced in at “reverse scale” Sheet Layout and Annotation Scale

  24. Things to know • MS_CUSTOMSCALEDEF points to the SCALES.DEF • By default: ..\workspace\system\data Sheet Layout and Annotation Scale

  25. Things to know Dialog drawingscale open Sheet Layout and Annotation Scale

  26. Model Seeds • Capability masks Configuration variables

  27. Model Seeds Other neat stuff If you want to have information already created in your models, point these variables to the files with the needed models

  28. # CAPABILITY_MODEL_CREATE_DESIGN => Allow the creation of new design models # CAPABILITY_MODEL_CREATE_SHEET => Allow the creation of new sheet models # CAPABILITY_MODEL_WITHOUT_VIEWGROUP => Allow model to be created without also creating a viewgroup # CAPABILITY_MODEL_CREATE_2D => Allow the creation of 2D models # CAPABILITY_MODEL_CREATE_3D => Allow the creation of 3D models # CAPABILITY_MODEL_CHANGE_TYPE => Allow the type of existing models to be changed # CAPABILITY_MODEL_DELETE_DESIGN => Allow design models to be deleted # CAPABILITY_MODEL_DELETE_SHEET => Allow sheet models to be deleted # CAPABILITY_MODEL_DELETE_LAST_DESIGN => Allow the last design model to be deleted (unless it is the default) # CAPABILITY_MODEL_DELETE_LAST_SHEET => Allow the last sheet model to be deleted (unless it is the default) # CAPABILITY_MODEL_EDIT_PROPERTIES_DESIGN => Allow name/description of design models to be changed # CAPABILITY_MODEL_EDIT_PROPERTIES_SHEET => Allow name/description of sheet models to be changed _USTN_CAPABILITY and Models Capability Masks Some owner/operators turn this off in their workspace

  29. Models and Cells A cell library is a DGN file with many models within…created with the “Place as cell” toggle enabled

  30. The possibility of editing a cell “live”

  31. TriForma / Bentley Building tools • GEOPAK Models and Applications

  32. GEOPAK Models and GEOPAK

  33. Drawing Extractions Models and TriForma

  34. Updates to Models in XM Models in XM

  35. Updates to Models in XM - Project Explorer Models in XM

  36. Updates to Models in XM - Model History • Use the View Groups tools to navigate back and forth between previously opened models Models in XM

  37. DGN File = Model Cells Cell = DGN File Reference = Model within Model Models Model = Model within Model References What is what now? Model = Reference = Cell = DGN?

  38. Who says you have to change? Reference = background (and automatically updates) Cells = symbols (and updates manually by you) Models = Anything you want! So what do I use where?

  39. Let’s open it up for Q&A Open Discussion
