  2. Stage:The area of the theatre where the action takes place. Actor:A person that acts as a character upon the stage. Director:A person who directs actors where to move on the stage. Stage Directions:Directions that apply to the different areas of the stage. 2 PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010

  3. In the beginning of theatre, actors performed on a flat stage and the audience sat on a flat floor. 3 PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010

  4. The problem with this came when one actor stood in front of another.The audience could not see. 4 PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010

  5. Then someone thought of the “RAKED” stage so the audience could see all the actors. 5 PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010

  6. The director needed terminology to tell the actors where to move on the stage. So they came up with Stage Directions. 6 PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010

  7. Since the back of the stage was higher, it was named “UP STAGE”. The lower half was called“DOWN STAGE”. Up Stage Down Stage 7 PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010
