Mission • The mission of the CAA is to support students in their educational planning as they work to achieve their career and life goals. • The CAA seeks to empower students to make effective educational choices based on their multidimensional and diverse life and career goals; • and to help students to become engaged and empowered learners. What We Do … • Help students identify and develop theiracademic goal. • Make sure students are in an appropriate field of study for their goals. • Assign students to an appropriate faculty advisor for their goal/major. • Help students start an academic program completion plan to map out courseworkfor their goal/major. • Help connect students to the appropriate campus/college resources. Why We Do … What We Do … • Students are falling off track early in their academic journey. • Only 37 percent of students completed their expected credits within the first year (based on enrollment of 12 credits per semester). • Fall 2013 semester we had over 400 course repeat request. Why We Do … What We Do … • Nationally, approximately 55 percent of first-time students attending public community colleges continue enrollment the next year. • According to another study only 34 percent of full-time continuing students continue enrollment for a third year. Struggling Students… Successful Students… Center for Academic Assistance, CG 224 accept personal responsibility, seeing themselves as the primary cause of their outcomes and experiences. discover self-motivation, finding purpose in their lives by discovering personally meaningful goals and dreams. master self-management consistently planning and taking purposeful actions in pursuit of their goals and dreams. employ interdependence, building mutually supportive relationships that help them achieve their goals and dreams (while helping others to do the same). See themselves as victims, believing that what happens to them is determined primarily by external forces such as fate, luck, and powerful others. Have difficulty sustaining motivation, often feeling depressed, frustrated, and/or resentful about a lack of direction in their lives. Seldom identify specific actions needed to accomplish a desired outcome, and when they do, they tend to procrastinate. Are solitary, seldom requesting, even rejecting, offers of assistance from those who could help.
