  1. T L S The Two Beasts The Beast… Chapter 13:1-10 Session 3 The AntiMessiah March 6, 2010

  2. Senators’ Ancestors, and Spin This photo, uncovered by genealogical researcher Judy Wallman while researching her own family tree, has an inscription on the back: ‘Remus Reid, horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison 1885, escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged in 1889.’

  3. Senators’ Ancestors, and Spin When Judy emailed this photo to Reid’s office for comment, Reid’s office sent back the following biographical summary of Uncle Remus’ life (no kidding) : “Remus Reid was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory . His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana railroad. Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life to government service, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed.”

  8. The Revelation 13 Two Beasts

  9. And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. Revelation 13:1 The dragon, cast out of Heaven after his final defeat at the hands of Michael and his forces, comes to the earth looking for an instrument through whom he can carry on his warfare against his hated Creator and God

  10. And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. Revelation 13:1 therion, beast of prey, (vs. zoa) A Gentile? Rev 17:15; Isa 57:20, 21

  11. And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. Revelation 13:1 “Stretch out Your hand from above; Rescue me and deliver me out of great waters, From the hand of foreigners [literally, strange children]”Ps 144:7

  12. And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. Revelation 13:1 The heads represent 7 world kingdoms and is the same Beast with seven heads that is ridden upon by the Harlot, the “mother of harlots and abominations of the earth” (Rev 17:3) The terminology describing the Beast indicates he is both a kingdom and its representative leader—the king

  13. And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. Revelation 13:1 “The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they will receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast.” (Rev 17:12-13)

  14. And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. Revelation 13:1 Unlike the dragon which wears crowns on its heads (Rev 12:3), the beast’s crowns are on its horns. The dragon’s crowns are associated with historical kingdoms of which this beast is one. The beast has crowns on each of his ten horns, indicating the rule of the ten contemporaneous kings associated with the last head or kingdom. These ten horns are the same as those of the last (terrible beast) of Daniel’s four beasts (Dan 7:7)

  15. And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. Revelation 13:1 This is an indication of his character. Daniel described this individual who “shall exalt and magnify himself above every god, shall speak blasphemies against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the wrath has been accomplished; for what has been determined shall be done” (Dan 11:36)

  16. And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. Revelation 13:2 Lion, Bear, Leopard: (reversed) Dan 7:3-8

  17. Hosea Can You See? As we progress in this chapter, we will see God sovereignly grant permission for this beastly empire to attain authority by way of empowerment from the dragon Hosea was shown these beasts and how they would be used to tear Israel to cause her to turn back to God

  18. Hosea 13:6-7 According to their pasture, so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted; therefore have they forgotten me. Therefore I will be unto them as a lion: as a leopard by the way will I observe them

  19. Hosea 13:8-9 I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the caul of their heart, and there will I devour them like a lion: the wild beast shall tear them. O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thine help.

  20. Hosea 13:10-11 I will be thy king: where is any other that may save thee in all thy cities? and thy judges of whom thou saidst, Give me a king and princes? I gave thee a king in mine anger, and took him away in my wrath.

  21. Hosea Can You See? The lion, bear, leopard, and wild beast all correspond to the world empires among which Israel is to be scattered and persecuted (Dan 7) during the time that she is in Dispersion until she will be regathered by her covenant-keeping Elohim (Eze 37:1-28; Mtt 24:31; Rom 11:26)

  22. And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. Revelation 13:2

  23. And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast. Revelation 13:3 Head wound: identifier Rev 13:3, 12, 14; Zech 11:17 This is the same phrase as in Rev 5:6 (as it) The False Prophet will give life to the beast, the saints had power to raise the dead, and a sovereign God can give such power to Satan as well to deceive the unrighteous

  24. Zechariah 11:17 Woe to the idol shepherd that leaveth the flock! the sword shall be upon his arm, and upon his right eye: his arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened.

  25. And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast. Revelation 13:3 This is the primary motivator for his worship (Rev 13:12, 14; 17:11)

  26. And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? Who is able to make war with him? Revelation 13:4 • Here it says they worship the dragon, but it is also said that they worship the Beast; the text emphasizes the dragon as the source of authority of the Beast • This is akin to idol worship in which the worshipper worships the demons behind the idols (Deu 32:17; Ps 106:37; Rev 9:20)

  27. And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? Who is able to make war with him? Revelation 13:4 • This is the first phase of the abomination of desolation (Mtt 24:15) when the man of sin himself sits in the temple of efei proclaiming himself as efei. His initial declaration as efeiwill take place in the Tribulation Temple

  28. And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? Who is able to make war with him? Revelation 13:4 • This cry of the world, ‘Who is like unto the Beast’ is a travesty of the song of Moses. When celebrating YHWH‘s overthrow of their enemies at the Red Sea, Israel sang, ’Who is like unto Thee, O efei, among the Gods! Who is like Thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders!’ (Ex 15:11 cf. Ps 89:8)

  29. And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. Revelation 13:5,6

  30. V.5 But when this Antichrist shall have devastated all things in this world, he will reign for three years and six months, and sit in the temple at Jerusalem; and then the Lord will come from heaven in the clouds, in the glory of the Father, sending this man and those who follow him into the lake of fire; but bringing in for the righteous the times of the kingdom, that is, the rest, the hallowed seventh day; and restoring to Abraham the promised inheritance, in which kingdom the Lord declared, that “many coming from the east and from the west should sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”— Irenaeus, Against Heresies, v.xxx

  31. And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. Revelation 13:7 • Here is where our grasp of God’s sovereignty and His glory must be our sure support • As he used Pharaoh in the days of the Exodus, so too he uses the Beast in the time of the end • He has raised up the Beast for His ultimate glory

  32. And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. Revelation 13:7 • This is a manifestation of the global gentile power represented in Nebuchadnezzar’s dream – Satan has complete control over the nations until Messiah’s return

  33. And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. Revelation 13:8

  34. The Book of Life • There are three categories of people references with the Book of Life: • The Unsaved • Each person to be born is written in the book. Those who die before coming to faith are blotted out • The Saved • Each person to be born is written in the book. Those who come to faith prior to death have their names retained in the book • Beast Worshippers • The beast worshipers are a unique category of people of the time of the end. They are so hardened against God and destined to reject Him in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary that they are never written in the book (Rev 13:8; 17:8)

  35. And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. Revelation 13:8 • Messiah’s sacrifice was not an afterthought of efei

  36. And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, 1st Peter 1:17-20

  37. If any man have an ear, let him hear. He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints. Revelation 13:9,10

  38. Next Session • We will continue (and finish) chapter 13 • Be prepared to discuss anything related to the Beast and the False Prophet
