Everyone’s Responsibility • Support the Players • Encouragement • Cheer • Congratulate • Let the Coaches Coach • Don’t Coach the Players • i.e. Shoot it, Pass it • Don’t yell at the other teams players • Don’t Coach the Coaches • Don’t Scream at the Officials • Don’t Yell at the Opposing Fans
Parents • Parent’s Concerns and Expectations • 1st Team Rep • 2nd Aaron Shaw or James Barker • Coaches will talk to parents and will always answer questions • Before and right after games is not a good time to ask coaches questions (They are very focused on the game) • 24 hour rule • Parents support the vision and culture that the coaches are creating for the team • Parents Volunteer
High School Lacrosse • High School Varsity, JV & FS Sports • Coaches create a vision and culture for their team. • Coaches teach young men how to be men and they build teams to win lacrosse games • No Guaranteed Playing Time at the High Schools Level • Parents that have issues with their son’s playing time need to have their sons speak to the coaches in regards to skills that needs to be improved to see more playing time. • i.e. Coach/Boss • Parent should never approach a coach in regards to their son’s playing time. • Coaches create attack lines, middie lines, and defense lines to win games not to try and play all players • Coaches make adjustments to these lines and players to combat what they see on the field during a game or how a player performs in practice • Coaches make mistakes. Please be patient.
Coach Wyatt Katsos • High School Varsity Head Coach • For those of you that don't know me, allow me to tell you a little bit about myself. I started playing lacrosse at 11 yrs old in Riverton. I was one of the first Herriman players when we got our own program. As a high school player, I was a starting goalie and captain on the team for 3 years and was All-Conference. I was on the First team All-State and received the Goalie MVP award. I went on to play lacrosse at Elmira College in New York. I was the starting goalie and then moved to starting attack to finish my college career. I joined the Herriman Lacrosse coaching staff last year under Steve Haymond as a player development and goalie coach. Having spent half my life in the lacrosse community, I have skilled knowledge of the sport as well as connections with other players/coaches. I am excited to bring those skills and connections to the program that really started my love for this sport. Herriman Lacrosse has become a powerhouse in this state and I plan to keep and build upon that legacy.
Coach Jake Christenson • High School Varsity Offensive Coordinator • Jake Christenson: Played his time at Copper Hills as a two-year varsity starter at middie and faceoff, played travel ball for Headstrong for one season. After graduation hung up the cleats and has been serving in the military with the Navy for the last 5 years. He has stated that he is very excited to get back in the game, not only to coach but help the boys grow as individuals.
Coach Chantz Roberts • High School Junior Varsity Offensive Coordinator • ChantzRoberts: I was a 4-time All-State recipient and positional MVP in 2013 for Herriman. I played on the U15 National team my freshman year and played club ball for the Utah Blackhawks and Utah Starz. I was recruited to play for the University of Utah but had to defer due to concussions. I’ve hung up the cleats ever since but I look forward to trying to make an impact on the players like my coaches did on me.
Coach Braeden Lance • High School JV Head Coach • Braden Lance: Played Lacrosse for Herriman from 2011-2014. He was the Head Coach of Riverton JV for 2 seasons. He is currently attending SLCC to acquire a nursing degree. He is excited to be back with the program he started with and is looking forward to continue building the future of Herriman Lacrosse.
Coach Scott Trammel • High School Freshman Sophmore Head Coach & High School Faculty Advisor • Scott Trammel: I grew up playing lacrosse in Houston, TX. I played 2 seasons at Southern Virginia University before transferring to BYU-Idaho. I graduated from BYU-Idaho with a degree in Special Education and now teach at Herriman High. I’m excited to be back for my 3rd season with the program.
Team Mission Statement To create a culture of excellence and pride in the hearts and minds of these young men, by creating a collective winners’ mentality that is perpetuated by each individual that carries throughout the Herriman community.
What is a Winner’s Mentality? • ”A Loser’s Mentality is a complainer’s Reality” • YOUR ATTIDUDE TOWARD WHAT YOU DO WILL SEPARATE YOU FROM EVERYONE ELSE! There are no exceptions to the rule. Good or bad, you will be labeled by the people around you. • DON’T MAKE EXCUSES, FIND SOLUTIONS. • Refuse to lose, refuse to quit, potential is infinite if you demand more out of yourself.
Our Core Values • COMMITMENT : What are you doing to better yourself and the team? Why are you here? Stay true to your commitment. • ATTENTION TO DETAIL: the difference between getting the job done vs doing the job well. Purposeful work. • SELF OWNERSHIP: IF YOU DON’T LIKE YOUR CURRENT SITUATION, ONLY YOU HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE! • INTELLECT: On and Off the field, what’re you reading, researching, studying that will improve your situation and make you more successful on and off the field.
Team Identity Commitment Attention to detail Self Ownership Intellect Discipline This will be our Claim to Fame. Our Bread and Butter. This will be how we win.
PET PEEVES: Just so we’re clear… • Check your ego at the door. It will not help you here. • Weak body language (palms up, throwing your stick.. Etc.) • BCE : Blaming, complaining, excuses. • ALWAYS RUN THOUGH THE LINE, THE INCHES MAKE THE MILES, DON’T CUT YOURSELF SHORT. • Saying “sorry” after a bad pass doesn't make it better, hustle makes up for mistakes. • You are only to talk to coaches and teammates, trash talking doesn'thelp us. I am the only one to talk to the referees. • Everything you do and say reflects on the team. Think before you act. Someone is always watching or listening.
Social Media: • Social media (guilty by association) • The more you reveal about yourself the more it can be used against you. • Be smart about what you post, like, share, and retweet. It reflects on the program. There are consequences associated with your online presence. If you have to question if it’s appropriate, don’t do it. • DON’T LET A 30 SECOND “LAUGH” RUIN YOUR OPPORTUNITIES IN THE FUTURE! • Social media can be a great tool for recruiting and networking. Think about the future!
Off the Field • Go to class and be there on time. Take pride in your ability to be on time for a class that’s a 5 minute walk from your last one. • Respect the administration. It is not a good idea to make people angry that could inhibit your ability to succeed. • Leave it better than you found it. (Figuratively and literally) • DRUGS, ALCOHOL, OR ANY OTHER ILLICIT ACTIVITY IS GROUNDS FROM REMOVAL FROM THE TEAM. • Be the person you would want to look up to. Just be a good dude!
On the Field • Treat every day as game day. • The best player plays as long as their attitude is productive to the growth of the team. • Hold yourself accountable. We shouldn't have to tell you every time you mess up. • Be coachable and responsive, we’re here to help you get better, if you’re willing to help yourself. • Show up on time. Find a ride ahead of time if you know you’ll need one. • Disrespect towards coaches, teammates, parents, and officials will not be tolerated.
Final Thoughts: • Respect is earned, you’re not entitled to playing time. • Once practice/games have begun, we are in a business mindset. We’re there to get better, not to joke around. • Your best is all we want from you, just remember that we are all human and we all make mistakes. • If you aren’t happy with your playing time, come talk to us and we will discuss what you need to do to get better.
