Tide of war shifts • McClellan was running as a Democrat that ran on the platform that sought peace(compromise) • Sherman seizes Atlanta in September of 1864 Lincoln now sees a light at the end of the tunnel • November, Lincoln wins popular vote and electoral(212-21)
Results • NJ, Kentucky, and Delaware • NJ legislature was Democratic, not all were Copperheads • Copperhead HQ Hackensack, NJ • Election of 1864 unified the North(Union) within a year Union would win the war.
House was bought by William McLean in 1863. McLean moved from Manassas, VA It is said the war started in his front yard and ended in his front parlor
Terms of Surrender • Attendance is taken to make sure no soldiers fighting take up arms against the Union again • Weapons are turned over • The men can go back to their homes
