  5. History of Zoology • Humans realized that animals can be domesticated. • Domesticate: • To tame (an animal) to live in close association with humans. • Animals can lose its ability to live in the wild.

  8. What did humans do when they realized animals can be domesticated? • Farm • Artificial selection is widely practiced.

  9. New species (1700s) • Exploration of the world discovers new species. • Carolus Linnaeus invents a system for naming and classifying species, called binomial nomenclature.

  10. Industrial Revolution (1720- 1840) • There was an increase interest in animals for pleasure and recreation. • Pet industry begins.

  12. 1900s • Advances in medicine result in studying animals • Horseshoe crab- 450 mya • Studied the long, single cell of the horseshoe crab’s optic nerve to establish field of neurobiology.
