  2. Definitions • While orbiting the Sun, Earth also turns on an imaginary line called an axis • With each rotation, or turn, on Earth’s axis, there is one period of daylight and one period of night.

  4. Question??? • What causes summer days to be long and warm? • The sunlight hits Earth’s surface more directly. • We live in the Northern hemisphere. Which picture shows summer on Earth for the northern hemisphere? Summer for Winter for Northern hemisphere Northern hemisphere

  6. Moon Phases • Lunar eclipse – occurs when the Moon passes into Earth’s shadow. • Next Lunar eclipse – December 21, 2010

  7. Moon Phases • Solar eclipse – occurs when the moon passes in front of the Earth to block sunlight from reaching Earth. • Next Solar eclipse – June 1, 2011

  8. Definition • Revolution – orbits, or trip, around the Sun. • Earth takes 365.25 days to revolve around the Sun. • The moon orbits/revolves the Earth • Rotation – The amount of time it takes to for one day to happen. • Earth takes 23 hours and 56 minutes to rotate once.

  10. Question??? • What causes planets to have days that are longer or shorter than a day on Earth? • Each planet rotates at a different speed, so it takes more or fewer hours to rotate once.

  11. Main Idea • The movement of Earth and Moon cause changes in seasons, daylight hours, the phases of the moon, and the night sky.
