  2. Overview of Youth Initiatives • LaGuardia serves youth ages 14-24 through four major youth initiatives: • The CUNY Fatherhood Academy • The Juvenile Justice Program • The Young Adult Internship Program (YAIP) • The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP)

  3. CUNY Fatherhood Academy Focuses on unemployed and underemployed fathers age 18 – 24 in order to strengthen families by promoting responsible fatherhood and economic stability through education, employment and personal development.

  4. Total of 40 participants per cohort • 20 week Academy program; 3 days per week • 15 hours of on-site programming each week • 9 hours of Academics • 6 hours of Workshops & Support Groups

  5. 15 – 20 hours per week • Paid part-time employment/Internship • Education/Personal Development • Employment/Professional Development • Father Involvement & Family Engagement

  6. Juvenile Justice Community Program The Young Adult Justice Scholars serves young adults between the ages of 16 and 24 who have been court involved within the last year.

  7. Create “non-mandated” enrollment (i.e., not required by criminal justice or child support agency) • Create direct connection to CUNY for low-income fathers • Serve as a model for expansion to other CUNY campuses • Serve as a model for other college-based fatherhood programs nationally

  8. Weekly 90 minute sessions throughout Academy (20 total modules) • Workshop topics: • Communication • Conflict Resolution & Handling Anger • Managing Relationships • Co-Parenting • Dealing with Stress • Building Support Networks

  9. CUNY Catch at LaGuardia has always specialized in those young people emerging from Rikers who are prepared to enter college immediately or demonstrate the potential to succeed in a GED program and – with stronger study skills, life skills, and support network – then enter college or vocational training.

  10. Young Adult internship Program (YAIP) • YAIP is a 14-week internship program for low-income disconnected New York City young adults aged 16-24 who are not working and not in school.

  11. YAIP is composed of a 3 week orientation followed by 11 weeks of paid internships that offer structured work opportunities. Upon completion of the internship, LaGuardia will provide nine months of follow-up services and help place the participants in permanent jobs, training programs, or educational settings.

  12. Three weeks of orientation prior to the Internship •  Eleven weeks of paid internship •  Job Counseling • Work Readiness Training leading to the National Work Readiness Credential

  13. Services Provided • Educational Assessment. • Referrals • Case Management and Peer Support • Career Exploration • Civic Engagement • Educational Service • Follow-up Services

  14. Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) A summer jobs program designed to provide a summer job experience to youth ages 14-24.

  15. Seven weeks of work experience • 25 hours per week • $7.25 an hour • Educational workshops • Evaluation

  16. Out Reach and Recruitment • All youth programs have a link on the LaGuardia web site. • Flyers are distributed in a number of venues. • Ads are placed on Craig’s list • Press releases are submitted to the local papers.

  17. CUNY on Wheels LaGuardia uses the CUNY on Wheels Bus to recruit for all it’s youth programs. The bus serves as a recruitment vehicle and a mobile classroom.

  18. Challenges • Development of the right internships with suitable, supportive work environments • Strengtheningparticipants’ skills and abilities to meet the needs of the worksite. • Finding appropriate contextualized literacy programs that could fast-track those without a GED to college readiness.

  19. Working with participants to change behavior that does not lead to success in the workplace; improving on their soft-skills and helping them address areas like conflict management. • Countering Street culture that does not support the work culture; helping them modify and improve language, dress and attitude.
