  1. Types of Socialization Learning Target: Discuss the process for socialization in adulthood

  2. Total Institutions A total institution is a place where residents are closed off from the rest of society • Not free to manage their own lives • Controlled and manipulated by the people in charge • The main purpose is to completely change a person **You are able to wear your own clothes, choose your friends, bring your own lunch, etc…..

  3. The first step-Desocialization • A total institution’s main purpose is to desocialize people, or the process by which people give up all norms, values, attitudes, and behaviors How this occurs: • Replace personal items with standard-issued items (take away their uniqueness and what defines them) • Serial numbers as a way to define them means a loss of privacy

  4. Desocialization In what ways would desocialization be necessary? Where might this occur?

  5. Resocialization • Resocialization is the process by which people adopt NEW norms, values, attitudes and behaviors • Resocialization can occur through a series of rewards and punishments • Rewards-taking identity • Punishments-nonconformity

  6. When can resocialization occur? • Military • Criminals • Adolescents

  7. Anticipatory Socialization • The process by which you prepare (in advance) for new norms, values, attitudes, and beliefs. • This involves VOLUNTARY change • May occur when people move from different stages in their lives ***How is dating a form of anticipatory socialization?

  8. Reference Group A teenager may want to resemble people their age, so they will abandon norms, values, and beliefs previously held . This process will typical begin in the preteen stage, and the teenager will be the new reference group A reference group is what they use to evaluate themselves and which they acquire attitudes, values, beliefs, and norms
