Self- Injury/ Self- Mutilation “Cutters” • Self-injury is not something people talk about very often, but for an estimated 2 to 3 million Americans it is a serious problem. • The majority of people who self-injure are women between the ages of 13 and 30, but there are "cutters" of every age, gender, & economic group.

  3. Some Common Reasons Why People Cut Themselves They find it soothing: • To feel pain on the outside instead of the inside • To cope with feelings  To express anger A way of communicating what they can't say with words: •  To tell people they need help • To get people's attention

  4. --continued An attempt to get people to react to their actions: • To get people to care for them • To make other people feel guilty •  To drive people away • To get away from stress and responsibility • To manipulate situations or people

  5. Many people who self-injure say they do it because they normally feel "numb" and cutting helps them to "feel alive."

  6. Self- Injury/ Self- Mutilation “Piercing & Tattooing” Piercing, tattooing, picking at skin, burning by a lighter or a cigarette or cutting by a knife or a razor are viewed by some psychologists as a cry in distress or self-mutilation of sorts. 

  7. Is it an act of rebellion and protest against the authority of adults and the norms and rules adults want kids to follow?  Are youngsters, through tattooing and piercing, announcing their independence?Is it an outward expression of pain they experience on the inside? What do you think?

  8. Self- Injury/ Self- Mutilation“Tanning Booths” • Ultra Violet Rays can lead to: • Eye damage • Immune system changes • Cataracts • Wrinkles & premature aging of the skin • Skin cancers

WARNING SIGNS possible indicators of increased suicide risk Changes in behavior: • Changes in behavior: • Changes in mood: • Changes in thinking: • Changes in life events: • Sudden alienation from family & friends • Drug & alcohol abuse • Crying spells • Explosive rage • Dramatic highs and lows • Difficulty concentrating • Focus on morbid or death themes • Death of a family member or friend, especially by suicide • Separation or divorce • Loss of important relationship, including pet • Public humiliation or failure

  11. Possible Verbal Hints of Impending Suicidal Behavior • I won't be a problem for you much longer. • Nothing matters. • I wish I were dead. • That's the last straw. • I can't take it anymore. • Nobody cares about me. • I wish I were never born.
