  1. Wisdom Imagination and Time At the very heart of medical science is a void that is unpredictable and uncontrollable-it is the murmurings of a human voice. Cecil Helman

  2. A cunning plan for today 3 groups one for each word What does it mean to the group One by one feedback Sandwich with my thoughts Summary

  3. Wisdom Imagination Time 3 groups What does this word mean to you? Summarise on flipchart to feed back to SBTW 10 minutes

  4. TIME

  5. TIME Usually means life time Connects people together Different types-subjective/event/distant/ chronological Stories create knowledge Quality v quantity

  6. Few quotes Souls mingle and blend together so that the seam which joins them together can no longer be found Live in the moment. Now is gone and the future isn’t here yet Doctors stick to chronological time but Healers transcend time

  7. TIME Reflection Durability Causality Flow

  8. Few quotes The clergy promised life after death. Doctors promise life before death. Flow- a state of effortless concentration so deep that you lose the sense of time The idea that the future is unpredictable is undermined every day by the ease with which the past is explained.

  9. TIME and Memory We are depositories of sensory memories in us and us in others linked by time Regret and blame. We go back to a point in time where a change would prevent us from beating ourselves up (regret) or others beating us up (blame)

  10. IMAGINATION

  11. IMAGINATION Time-anticipation of the future Mood Self dependent Foresight-we are judged on outcomes Memory-ease of retrieval Walking in someonelses shoes Plausability and coherence Probability

  12. System 1 and system 2 • System 1 is automatic responsive reactive and often wrong • System 2 is rational rationed and designed to affirm rather than question system1 • Links to our evolution and means that first impressions do count • We often decide emotionally and based on the ease of recall

  13. Few quotes Regret and hindsight are worse when we have put in a lot of foresight Unbiased appreciation of uncertainty is the cornerstone of rationality Illusions of validity and skill are maintained by professional cultures We like cognitive ease-positive emotion/ good story/feels familiar/true/effortless

  14. IMAGINATION and Memory • Without memory we are stuck between a past we cant recall and a future we cant anticipate • Both creative and associative memory need to work well

  15. WISDOM

  16. WISDOM • Knowledge • Truth • Time dependent • Expertise-intuition instinct impulse • We decide emotionally but justify intellectually (tail wags the dog!) • Enhancement/betterment

  17. Knowledge Know is related to things in the past Normality needs regular updating Is psychosociocultural-belief based values

  18. WISDOM • Knowledge • Truth • Time dependent • Expertise-intuition instinct impulse • We decide emotionally but justify intellectually (tail wags the dog!) • Enhancement/betterment

  19. Truth • Likelihood of it being accepted to be true is linked to the ease of memory retrieval construction and association • Pinball wizard. Truth-> Certainty->Perception->Belief • Multiple observations • Important observers • Scepticism (system 2 activity)

  20. WISDOM • Knowledge • Truth • Time dependent • Expertise-intuition instinct impulse • We decide emotionally but justify intellectually (tail wags the dog!) • Enhancement/betterment

  21. TIME • Causality • Truth is Time dependent • Expertise-instinct intuition impulse • We decide emotionally but justify intellectually • Enhancement/betterment

  22. Few quotes Individuals are a mixture of natural cause and chance occurrence. Insight into the self+moral sense+sufficient drive causes change. Success = talent+luck! The gap between experience and feedback needs to be short to develop expertise. Intuition is simply recognition

  23. Expertise • Cognitive dissonance/resonance • Learning cycle • Conceptualise • Experiment • Experience • Reflect • Barriers to learning

  24. Few quotes We have almost unlimited capacity to ignore our ignorance Unbiased appreciation of uncertainty is the cornerstone of rationality Illusions of validity and skill are maintained by professional cultures Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad

  25. MEMORY • Ease of retrieval trumps the number retrieved • We decide based on • Emotional response • Ease of recall-recently We remember the peak and the end bits rather than the duration

  26. MEMORY is the KEY “Memory is the treasury and guardian of all things…..The life of the dead is placed in the memory of the living.” Cicero It is the link between Wisdom Imagination and Time

  27. THANK YOU ALL… for the memories
