  2. Basic Information on Sherman • February 8, 1820- February 14, 1891 • He was an American soldier, businessman, educator, and author • He served as a General in the Union Army during the Civil War 1861-1865 • He was declared to be the first modern general

  3. What Was Sherman’s Goal • His goal was to split the southern Confederacy in half. To do this he and his troops burned bridges, supplies, crops, and anything that could be deemed useful by the Confederate army

  4. Why Is He So Hated • He was hated by the south because of his aggressive campaign of the March to the Sea. During this campaign, Sherman ordered all houses, farms, towns, and other, civilian occupancies burned to the ground. During this even children and woman were left starving and homeless. Many of Sherman’s troops were known to rape the woman they came across, and loot the stores
