  2. 2nd Grades Schedule 8:40- Morning Routines/Announcements 8:55- Shared Reading 9:20- Guided Reading 10:00-Snack (peanut allergy) 10:05- Spelling/Working With Words 10:30- Science/Social Studies 11:00- Everyday Math

  4. Reading • Anthology series is Harcourt Trophies. • Shared Reading is done in a whole group setting. • Guided Reading is individualized into small groups to meet students’ specific needs. • Working with words gives students time to practice phonemics and spelling patterns.

  5. Guided Reading • Mrs. Mirabelli (reading specialist), Mrs. Bram and I will meet with heterogeneous and homogeneous groups throughout the week. • Students will meet in a small group every day Monday through Thursday. • During guided reading students will work on practicing the strategies taught in shared reading.

  6. Centers • Centers are independent, literacy related work. • Students complete centers when they are not meeting with a teacher during guided reading time. • Students are expected to do their best work on their centers. • Centers will be graded depending on the number of points they are worth.

  7. Working with Words/Spelling • Almost every Monday students will bring home a new spelling list with a particular rule. • Each list will also have a few high frequency words included. • On Friday there will be a spelling test. • We will practice the words during the week but you should also practice the words at home every night.

  8. Math • Everyday Math is the program we have recently adopted and will be using to teach your children math concepts. • Concepts will be taught in a spiraling method. They will continue to be reviewed throughout the year. • The Home Link Book will be sent home on an as needed basis for homework.

  9. Writing Workshop • We learn about different types of writing throughout the year: letters, poetry, narrative, and informational, etc…

  10. Homework • A weekly homework calendar will be sent home at the beginning of each week. It may include: • Reading • Math • Math homework will be given corresponding to the math lessons each week. • Spelling • A spelling list will come home every Monday. Students are expected to practice for their spelling test on Friday.

  12. Classroom Jobs • Each student is responsible for a job in the classroom. Jobs change regularly.

  15. How you can help! • Read every night with your child • Make sure your child has a nutritious snack • Practice spelling words
