The Far Reaching Authority of the Church • Religion as a unifying Force: • The feudal system was designed to divide people • The Church brought people together • Although life for Medieval Christians was harsh they took joy in the thought of salvation through the sacraments. • Village church was both a spiritual and social center • People would come to pray, meet, and celebrate together
The Far Reaching Authority of the Church • The Law of the Church: • Churches authority was both spiritual and political • All Medieval Christians; kings and peasants alike were subject to cannon law; or church law • Church est. courts for people accused of breaking cannon law • Harsh punishments were excommunication and interdict • Popes use threat of excommunication and interdict to get kings to do as they wish

Emperor Clashes with the Pope • Lay Investiture: • Ceremony where kings and nobles appointed church officials • Kings wished to control the bishops; very influential clergy members • 1075 Pope Greg VII puts an end to lay investiture • Emperor Henry IV tries to force the Pope to step down • Pope has Henry excommunicated!!!
