Physics Formal Lab Format Labs will be typed on plain paper Labs will have all team names and the date in the upper right hand corner of first page of the report Labs will have a title in the center of the first page of the report Labs will contain 6 sections prefaced as followed Purpose Equipment Procedure Data Data Analysis/Graphs Conclusion
Purpose • This is a statement of your problem or area of interest to be investigated. • You may provide an abstract or hypothesis as a preface to the purpose, but the purpose must provide overall direction for the laboratory investigation and MUST BE ADDRESSED or RESOLVED in the CONCLUSION
Equipment • List all lab equipment used in the experiement • Provide a labeled diagram/picture to illustrate the configuration of the apparatus
Procedure • Identify and name all experimental (dependent) variables • Describe how the independent variables will be controlled • Write a procedure that provides steps a physics student could follow to reproduce your experimental results by reading your procedure
Data • Data measured directly from the experiment • Data derived values by average or formula • Units for data table should by specified at least on table headings • A sample calculation MUST appear next to the data table(s) to show how derived • Show at least ONE error calculation for estimation or measurement uncertainties
Data Analysis • Include all Graphs with: • Title ( Y vs. X) • Axis labels with units • Appropriate scaling • Analysis of slope • Analysis of re-expressed data • All post lab calculations and overall error calculations
Conclusion • Discuss any questionable data or surprising results • Explain possible sources of error • Answer your PURPOSE with your own data analysis RESULTS • Suggest changes which might better test your results
