  4. The Character • The Narrator • Mentally unstable? • Policies changed for the treatment of the insane (before people were shunned and mistreated) • The Narrator suffers from “Over-acuteness of the senses (nervousness).”

  5. Reliable vs Unreliable? • Reliable narrator- reflects the truth that the author is trying to share; does not involve personal feelings. • Unreliable narrator- credibility has been compromised; shows bias; makes assumptions. • Ex. Fight club

  6. Conflict & Culture • Internal conflict (man vs himself), External conflict (man vs society) • What is the conflict? • Culture does not treat mentally insane people very well. Do you think that has something to do with his behavior?
