Choosing my Mentor • Be clear on why you want a mentor. • Define your personality and communication style. • Explain why you’re asking and what you’d expect. • Choose a mentor you truly respect. • Ask for input on a single specific topic. • Look for ways you can reciprocate. • Show gratitude. • Think beyond former bosses and professors. • Mentoring can take many forms. • This is your path, not theirs. • Don’t become too dependent on your mentor. • Have more than one mentor. • Good mentors are very busy people.

The best mentees are those who: • Want to proactively advance in their careers • Want to proactively look at their strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for improvement • Are willing to share their mistakes and failures in order to learn from them • Are willing to listen to the advice of others and act upon it • Can be honest with themselves and introspective • Have the ability to hold themselves accountable and be self-disciplined • Are open to new ideas and opinions • Have a good sense of humor with the ability to take situations seriously but be able to laugh at themselves
