  1. Math Vocabulary By : Kandice Smith

  2. Integer A number with no fractional part. Includes the counting numbers {1, 2, 3, ...}, zero {0}, and the negative of the counting numbers {-1, -2, -3, ...}

  3. Rational Numbers Any number that can be made by dividing one integer by another

  4. Scientific Notation A method of writing or displaying numbers in terms of a decimal number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10.

  5. Perfect square Perfect square is a number that has a rational number as its square root

  6. irrational number A real number that cannot be written as a simple fraction

  7. real numbers A number that is rational or irrational, not imaginary

  8.  Density Property Density is a physical property of matter, as each element and compound has a unique density associated with it

  9. Adjacent angles Two angles are Adjacent if they have a common side and a common vertex (corner point), and don't overlap

  10. Coefficient A number used to multiply a variable

  11. Distance Formula The distance formula can be obtained by creating a triangle and using the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of the hypotenuse.

  12. Domain The set of all possible values of an independent variable of a function

  13. Hypotenuse In geometry, a hypotenuse is the longest side of a right-angled triangle, the side opposite the right angle

  14. Legs of a Right Triangle the sides opposite to the acute angles

  15. Rational Number any number that can be expressed as the quotient or fraction p/q of two integers, with the denominator q not equal to zero

  16. Range The difference between the lowest and highest values

  17. Slope The word slope is used to describe the measurement of the steepness of a straight line. The higher the slope, the steeper the line

  18. Scientific Notation a way of writing numbers that are too big or too small to be conveniently written in decimal form.

  19. Prism a prism is a transparent optical element with flat, polished surfaces that refract light. At least two of the flat surfaces must have an angle between them.

  20. Scatter plot A graph of plotted points that show the relationship between two sets of data

  21. Slope Intercept Form Equation of a line in slope intercept form, as well as how to find equation given slope and one point.

  22. Absolute Value a term used in mathematics to indicate the distance of a point or number from the origin (zero point) of a number line or coordinate system.

  23. Exponent : The representation of a number in the form: X y. where x and y are integers is called an exponential representation

  24. Product the result of multiplying, or an expression that identifies factors to be multiplied

  25. Pythagorean Therom a2+b2 = c2. Note: c is the longest side of the triangle; a and b are the other two .

  26. Acute Triangle An acute triangle is a triangle whose angles are all acute (i.e. less than 90°).

  27. Probability something likely to happen: something that is likely to happen or exist

  28. Factor quantity multiplied with others

  29. Variable  inconsistent or uneven in quality or performance

  30. Evaluate find numerical value of something

  31. Quotient result of division

  32. Acute angle any angle that measures between 0 and 90 degrees

  33. Congruent two triangles are congruent they will have exactly the same three sides and exactly the same three angles.

  34. Reciprocal given, performed, felt, etc., in return

  35. vertex is a special kind of point that describes the corners or intersections of geometric shapes.

  36. polygon a plane shape with straight sides.

  37. Diameter any straight line segment that passes through the center of the circle and whose endpoints lie on the circle

  38. sum An amount obtained as a result of adding numbers

  39. Dividend The amount that you want to divide up

  40. Divisor a divisor of an integer n , also called a factor of n , is an integer which divides n without leaving a remainder.

  41. Median the numerical value separating the higher half of a sample, a population, or a probability distribution

  42. Mean used quite regularly to determine final math marks over a term or semester.

  43. Mode Similarly, for a data set (2, 4, 9, 6, 4, 6, 6, 2, 8, 2) (right histogram), there are two modes: 2 and 6. A distribution with a single mode is said to be unmoral.

  44. Pyramid a structure whose shape is roughly that of a pyramid in the geometric sense; that is, its outer surfaces are triangular ...

  45. Quadrilateral a polygon with four sides (or edges) and four vertices or corners.

  46. Parallelogram A 4-sided flat shape with straight sides where opposite sides are parallel.

  47. Rectangle any quadrilateral with four right angles

  48. Reflection the change in direction of a wave front at an interface between two different media

  49. Rate , in which two measurements are related to each other; Rate of travel, or velocity · Naval rating or rate

  50. Trapezoid a convex quadrilateral with at least one pair of parallel sides is referred to as a trapezoid
