  1. DNA Pages 290-291

  2. DNA • -genetic information that is passed from parent to offspring • Discovered by Watson & Crick (1953) • Looks like a “twisted ladder” (Double Helix)

  3. Structure of DNA • Sides of the ladder are made up of a sugar & a phosphate molecule -Green molecule is the Sugar (aka Deoxyribose) -Yellow molecule is the phosphate.

  4. DNA Structure Cont… • “Rungs of the Ladder” are made up of 4 nitrogen bases • A – Adenine • T – Thymine • G – Guanine • C - Cytosine • Adenine pairs with Thymine (A –T) • Guanine pairs with Cytosine (G – C) • So how can we remember how DNA bases pair up… • “ At The Grand Canyon”

  5. DNA Do Now • Complete the other half of this DNA molecule • ATTGCGCATG • If a DNA molecule is 20 rungs long and there are 12 adenines (A) how many thymine molecules would there be? • In the same molecule mentioned above, how many Guanine molecules would there be? Cytosine?

  6. DNA Review • Answer the reading check question on page 291. • Read the two paragraphs about mutations on page 294 and answer the reading check question. • Answer question 3 on page 295. • Answer question 5 on page 295.
