  2. Drake was an Englishman who wanted to explore trade and settlement in the Pacific Ocean. He became a famous sea pirate!

  3. In 1567, Drake became a sea captain. He lead several trading voyages from England to the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.

  4. In 1577, Drake was commissioned by Queen Elizabeth 1 to sail around the world. Here is a map of his travels. It was a secret expedition to the Pacific coast of North America.

  5. Drake sailed on the Golden Hind, but there were five other fleet on the voyage with a crew of 150 men.

  6. In 1578, he entered the Strait of Magellan and later sailed westward to the Cape of Good Hope.

  7. In 1579 , they sailed by Panama where Drake pirated Spanish ship for food and treasures.

  8. In 1580, Drake returned to England with only one ship that carried lots of riches including spices, precious metals, jewels, silks, fine porcelains and irreplaceable maps.

  9. War broke out with Spain in 1585. Drake commanded a fleet and did lots damage to the Spanish ships and cities.

  10. Drake helped the British defeat the Spanish Armada. The Spanish called him “The Dragon.”

  11. In 1596, Drake died while on a voyage to the West Indies. He died of dysentery and had a sea burial.
