Alliance College-Ready Public Schools Student Subgroup Performance School Board Meeting March 20, 2014 David Medina Director of Research & Analysis
What are subgroups? • A subgroup is a numerically significant population of students enrolled at a school • Schools are accountable for student achievement school-wide and for each significant subgroup (at least 100 students or 15% of population) • What are some significant subgroups in Alliance Schools? • English Learners • Special Education • Race/Ethnicity • Free/Reduced Lunch (Disadvantaged) • Foster Youth (15 students)
Why does it matter? • We are required to adequately serve all subgroups • The California Department of Education and LAUSD focus on subgroup performance when evaluating our schools with increased focus as part of Local Control Funding and Accountability • Our charter petitions are now required to identify and report annually on subgroup performance, not just schoolwide
Today’s Activity • I will briefly discuss trends at the Alliance level for: • Special Education v. non-Special Education • English Learners v. RFEP (reclassified) • I will ask each school site to look over their own data: • Are there achievement gaps between subgroups and students not in the subgroup in English and/or Math • What are some action items that your school will take to close that gap given what you see?
