Warm-up In this unit you will... 1.read a questionnaire, a magazine article and a letter 2.write your “curriculum vitae”and a letter of application. 3.listen to dialogues and an interview. 4.talk about your future career and practise doing interviews. 5.learn about reported requests,commands and statemnets.

  3. Exercise 1 Which jobs can you see in the photos? Use the keys words to help you. Add more jobs to the list

  4. Key Words architect,computer programmer ,doctor, electrician,vet,engineer,farmer,hotel receptionist,journalist,lawyer,plumer,politician,shop assisstant,soldier,tourist guide

  5. Exercise 2 Listen to four situations.write down the jobs from the Key Words above

  7. Exercise 3 Have you thought about your future career?choose a professional area that you are interested in from the Key Words below.

  9. Exercise 4 Complete the sentences with the Key Words career,job,profession,work,occupation,business,employment

  12. Exercise 1 Choose three adjectives from the key words that describe you best. Key words: careful,creatvie,reliable, confident,emotional,flexible, generous,helpful,logical, motivated,organised,patient

  13. Exercise 2 Read the questionnarie.decide what you would do in these situations.

  14. Exercise 3 Read the key to the answers on page 91. Does the description fit your personality? Would you like to do the kind of jobs that the key suggests for you?

  15. Grammar: Reported Speech(I)

  16. Exercise 4 Look at the reported requests and orders from the questionnaire. What are people’s actual words? There is uaually more than one option.

  17. Exercise 5 Look at Exercise 4. How do pronouns change in Reported Speech?

  18. Exercise 6 Complete the rule.When we report people’s reuqests or orders we use the patter:ask/tell/orer somebody+(infinitive )When the order or request is negative,we use the pattern:ask/tell/order somebody+( not )+infinitive

  19. Exercise 7 Report these orders and requests. Use the beginnings provided. 1.“Could you lend me a pen?” Peter asked me 2. “Don’t park on the pavement. It’s forbidden.” The officer told the driver 3. “Be quite,please.” The teacher ordered the class 4. “Can you give me a lift home?”Mary asked John 5. “Don’t dye your hair. Your natural colour is lovely.” The hairdresser advised the girl 6. “Read the text and answer the questions.” The examiner told the students

  21. Exercise 8 The manager of an office is ill and ,on the phone,gives her assistant instructions for the people in the office. Rewrite the instructions starting with tell. 1.Mr. Smith must cancel my trip to Tokyo. 2.John must move Peter’s desk to room 308. 3.He can’t start redecorating the office before the end of the month. 4.He has to pick up Mr. Jensen from the airport on the 24th. 5.Mary mustn’t send the contracts off before I come back. 6.She should prepare the information I need for my presentation.

On the first day in a job be friendly don’t wear very informal colthes or heavy make-up be kind and co-operative don’t share very personal information—you don’t know who you are talking to don’t try to make friends with your boss listen rather than speak—learn as much as work hard and don’t spend too much time chatting or resting keep your desk tidy at all times don’t argue with anyone
