Specific Objectives: By the end of this lecture, the student will be able to: • Identify the importance of growth and development. • Define growth and development. • Mention the principles of growth and development. • List factors affecting growth and development. • Mention types of growth and development. • Identify the stages of development.

  5. Growth Growth refers to an increase in physical size of the whole body or any of its parts. It is simply a quantitative change in the child’s body. It can be measured in Kg, pounds, meters, inches, ….. etc

  7. Development • Development refers to a progressive increase in skill and capacity of function. • It is a qualitative change in the child’s functioning. • It can be measured through observation.

  8. Types of growth and development Types of growth: - Physical growth (Ht, Wt, head & chest circumference) - Physiological growth (vital signs …) Types of development: - Physical development - Intellectual development - Emotional development - Social development

  9. Physical Development Newborns have little strength and muscle control Newborns can’ t hold up their head it must always be supported. By the time they are two months old they are able to hold their head for a few minutes Many infants begin to crawl at 7 months and they often walk before there 1st birthday.

  10. Intellectual Development Infants learn through their senses: sight, smell, hearing, taste and touch. During the 1st month of life they only see objects that only exist in front of them. As they develop they learn to recognize voices and begin to become familiar with their care taker.

  11. Emotional Development Newborns respond to two basic sensations: Comfort and discomfort As they get older they begin to express fear, anger and joy.

  12. Social Development Infants must learn to trust the adults in their world. Trust comes from learning that their world is safe. Infants learn to trust an adult when they return and fulfill their needs. Infants cry and giggle to communicate their needs, wants. By four months of age infants show that they enjoy social time such as meals and play time.
