HOW TO DO A PRESENTATION Sarah Jo H. Jones Carroll County Age 10
MATERIALS NEEDED • 2 Standard Posters – nothing neon or too bright OR a tri-fold science board • Ruler • Pencil • Permanent Marker • Pictures • Glue or Tape • Visual Aids • Nice clothes • pants and dress shirt/polo for boys, pants and blouse or dress/skirt for girls If you want to use computer printouts instead of hand writing then you will need a computer, printer, and paper.
PROCEDURE • Pick a topic • Create an outline – include materials needed, procedure, and summary • Make posters • Gather props for demo • Practice with an adult (parent or teacher) • Pick out a nice outfit • Take a deep breath and present!
TIPS AND HINTS • If you want to reuse your posters don’t write directly on them, type out your presentation and tape it to the board. • Use a pencil to write on the board first and then outline it in marker. • Type out your presentation on a computer if you have bad handwriting and use a computer to make your outline so you can spell check. • Use fonts and colors that are easy to see from a distance. • If you are baking or cooking use clear containers, have your ingredients pre-measured and have a completed product to share with the judges. • Bring an easel with you if you’re using the 4 poster method so you don’t have to have someone hold it for you. • Set up all your props before you start. • Smile during your presentation! • Take a deep breath before you start talking • Look at your audience and talk to them not the table or the floor • Never turn your back on the audience while you’re talking • Speak loud enough that you can be heard in the back of the room • NO HOODIES, JEANS OR SHORTS!
SUMMARY I chose to talk about how to do a presentation because public speaking is important to everyone. You never know when you’ll have to speak in front of a group of people. I learned a lot about the steps involved in creating a presentation and I hope you have learned something from me today! Thank you for your time, are there any questions?
