  1. Planning and Implementing Interventions for Reading Problems J.T. Ridgely, BWES Lisa Falsetti-Hopkins, BWES

  2. Objectives for Today’s Session: • What happened next with the case? • Introduction to Instructional Assessment for Reading • Collecting Baseline Data & Setting Goals • Plotting an Aim Line • Developing an Intervention • Graphing Intervention Data • What happened to Aleah?

  3. What happened next? • Started problem ID with the teacher • Wanted to focus on reading, but unsure of which skills to focus on • Conducted instructional assessments to get a better understanding of reading

  4. What is Instructional Assessment? • Review of the basics . . . • Good ideas for teaching skills • Good tools for measuring comprehension • A great way to help the teacher reflect on his/her instruction (the triangle)

  5. Data to Graph on SDF What data might you need to collect? In what order? How do you set your goals?

  6. How did we decide what to focus on? • What skill/s does the teacher prioritize? • Where will we get the most progress for our efforts? • What can we actually do, and do well?

  7. Baseline Data and Goal Setting The following baseline data was collected: 12/15 56 wpm (N benchmark) 12/16 64 wpm (N benchmark) 1/6 56 wpm (O benchmark) Where do you put this data on the SDF?

  8. Setting Goals and Plotting an Aim Line How would you set short, intermediate, and long-term goals with the teacher? Based on Aleah’s baseline data, what would be reasonable short, intermediate, and long-term goals?

  9. Completing the Goals and Aim Line on the SDF Using the given baseline data and the goals you selected, fill in the first and second pages of the SDF . . . . Make sure you: • Set your goals • Fill in the vertical axis of your graph • Plot your aim line

  10. Developing the Intervention • Key characteristics of the fluency intervention • How can we implement the intervention with fidelity? • Who is responsible for the intervention?

  11. Graphing Intervention Data You have the following intervention data on Aleah for the first four weeks of intervention: Week 1 – 87 wpm (O benchmark) Week 2 – 103 wpm (O benchmark) Week 3 – 110 wpm (O benchmark) Week 4 – 94 wpm (O benchmark) Please graph this data on the SDF

  12. You missed a couple of weeks of data (weeks 5 & 6) because of . . . • Winter Break • Spring Break • Student Absent • Staff Absent • Insert your own reason . . . How do you handle this on the SDF?

  13. Graph the rest of the data: Week 7 - 76 wpm (P benchmark) Week 8 – 82 wpm (P benchmark) Week 9 – 93 wpm (P benchmark) Week 10 – 89 wpm (P benchmark) Based on this data, did Aleah meet the short, intermediate, and/or long-term goals?

  14. What happened with Aleah?

  15. What happened with other students using this intervention? • Review of case examples: • Kindergartener • 3rd Graders • 4th Grader
