STD’s (Venereal Diseases) • known as sexually transmitted infection (STI) or venereal disease (VD) • is an illness that has a significant probability of transmission between humans or animals by means of human sexual behavior, including vaginal intercourse, oral sex, and anal sex. • in recent years the term sexually transmitted infection (STI) has been preferred, as it has a broader range of meaning; a person may be infected, and may potentially infect others, without showing signs of disease. Some STI’s can also be transmitted via the use of IV drug needles after its use by an infected person, as well as through childbirth or breastfeeding.

Gonorrhea • What is Gonorrhea • Gonorrhea - a sexually transmitted disease (STD) resulting from INFECTION with the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. N. gonorrhoeae infects 350,000 Americans each year, though public health officials believe another 350,000 people have gonorrhea that goes undiagnosed because they do not know they are infected. Gonorrhea is highly contagious and passes among sexual partners through vaginal intercourse, anal intercourse, or oral sex. People who have multiple sex partners have increased risk for gonorrhea as well as other STDs. Gonorrhea is a public health concern of great magnitude worldwide because a number of strains of N. gonorrhoeae have become resistant to the ANTIBIOTIC MEDICATIONS used to treat the infection.
Hepatitis, Viral Hepatitis B
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is a bacterial inflammation of the fallopian tubes, ovaries, uterus and cervix.
Trichomoniasis • one of the most common curable sexually transmitted infections. • caused by a parasitic protozoan called Trichomonas vaginalis. • Although both women and men contract trichomoniasis, men are more likely to be asymptomatic. • Trichomoniasis does not usually have long-term implications on health but is easily passed between sexual partners. • Reinfection is common, especially if antibiotic treatments are not completed before further sexual contact. • The most common symptoms of infection are discharge and painful urination. • Trichomoniasis has also been found to be a cofactor for HIV transmission. • It is thought that this infection, which causes lesions and inflammation, increases risk of HIV infection upon exposure. • It may also be passed from infected mother to child during birth.
