  2. What does this table tell us? People talk differently, for a variety of reasons. The talk is also different for a variety of reasons. Today's Lesson is about WHY people talk differently

  5. The Language Print Everybody has a language print that is based on a variety of things, such as one of the things that we have just seen: Geography. What might the other things be that determine the way we speak and use language? The correct word for a person's individual talk and pattern of speech in their ‘Idiolect’

Factors That determine an individual’s idiolect • Geography - Age; Social group; Education; Where you’re from. • Context – where you are when you are speaking; • Audience – to whom you are speaking; • Mode - the way we express ourselves according to whether we are talking face-to-face or remotely by text or online chat (known as 'multimodal' talk).

  7. How does this person talk? • Geography - a 40 year old mother of two who does not work and stays at home all day with her children. • Context – she is talking to her children at home. • Audience– The children are 5 and 6. • Mode – She is talking to them through a walkie-talkie.

How does this person talk? • Geography - a 40 year old mother of two who does not work and stays at home all day with her children. • Context – she is discussing the fact that one of the children has a rash. • Audience– The woman is speaking to the Doctor. • Mode – She is talking to the doctor on the phone.

Applying the language print to a profile Profile One Male Middle Ages (35-50) Geography: Lives in a nice rural Kurri Kurri but was raised in inner city Sydney Job: Veterinary Surgeon Family: 4 children (2 teenagers and 2 Juniors) Hobbies: Member of local golf club and also member of local gym. How do each of these people speak because of or when they are in the above environments? Makes notes.

Applying the language print to a profile Profile One Male Middle Ages (35-50) Geography: Lives in a nice rural village in Kurri Kurribut was raised in inner city Sydney He may speak very nicely using correct vocabulary and grammar when talking to neighbours, “Good Morning, how are you?” but may slip back into more casual language and vocabulary when he feels comfortable, “hiya mate, what you been up to?” Over to you: Job: Veterinary Surgeon; Family: 4 children (2 teenagers and 2 Juniors); Hobbies: Member of local golf club and also member of local gym. What kind of language? What kind of idiolect? Think about context and mode. Profile Two Male Young Adult (22-34) Geography: Lives in the City Centre but was raised in a small WA town. Job: Works in television, media and press. Family: No immediate family, but goes home to parents and siblings every month. Hobbies: Socialising, Clubbing, Drinking, Gym member, constantly on FB and Twitter. Can you make notes that support the type of idiolect that this individual uses?
